Applying a License to Your Project (Copyright)

All Rights Reserved

The copyright of the project is always reserved by the contributors to the project. To reserve all rights to a project, the project creator can explicitly state "All Rights Reserved."

If you're interested in allowing some reuse of your project to the outside world, Creative Commons provides you with some options to do just that.

Creative Commons Licensing

Creative Commons licenses protect your copyright and creative work while letting others know what use you'll permit, and under what conditions.

The six licenses offered by the Creative Commons are different combinations of four primary attributes:

Attribution

Others may copy, perform, distribute, and/or modify your work as your license specifies, as long as they give credit back to you.

No Derivative Works

Others may copy, perform, or distribute your work, but may not modify it.

Noncommercial

Others are not permitted to use your work for commercial purposes.

Share-Alike

When using your work, others must apply the exact same license to their work as you have applied to yours.

You can read more about the attributes, including examples of use, at the Creative Commons website.

There are six different Commons licenses:

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs

Under this license, the project may be copied, distributed, displayed, and/or performed by others for noncommercial purposes as long as they provide full attribution and do not alter, transform, or build upon the work.

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike

Under this license, the project may be copied, distributed, displayed, modified, built upon, and/or performed by others as long as they provide full attribution and release the derivative work under the exact same license.

Attribution-ShareAlike

Under this license, others may reuse, distribute, build upon, or modify the project as long as they provide proper attribution and release their work under the exact same license.

Attribution-NoDerivs

Under this license, the project may be copied, distributed, displayed, and/or performed by others as long as they provide full attribution and do not modify the original work in any manner.

Attribution-NonCommercial

Under this license, the project may be copied, distributed, displayed, and/or performed by others as long as they provide full attribution, do not modify the original work in any manner, and do not use the work for commercial purposes.

Attribution

Under this license, the project may be copied, distributed, displayed, modified, built upon, and/or performed by others as long as they provide full attribution.
