Two young boys COURTNEY (5) and MICHAEL (7) sit in front of a television set. Their MOTHER (30) clips bow ties onto their shirt fronts and spit combs their hair. She stares at the two for a moment and then hugs them tightly to her body. She is crying.

INT. Courtroom — day

The young MOTHER sits with her two boys. A custody hearing is in progress. The MOTHER is represented by a lawyer. The children's FATHER (37) is representing himself. Given the dialogue between the FATHER and the JUDGE we come to understand that the FATHER is an established lawyer who has a friendly relationship with this particular judge.

INT. Car — night

The two young boys sit barefoot in the back of a hatchback station wagon. Clothed in only pajamas the children shiver from the cold of the opend driver's side door. The FATHER gets into the car and the three drive away. Michael reaches down and holds Courtney's hand. Courtney lowers his head.

A teenage Courtney raises his head in response to a question. He is on the stand. A LAWYER is questioning him on behalf of his Father's latest trophy wife who sits across him in the courtroom.

No. We don't keep any oil cans in the house. Yes my father was home by 10 PM and No he deffinitely did not burn her dog alive.

There is an uproar in the courtroom. The Father, representing himself, insists that the last comment pertains to a previous and CLOSED case and therefore should be stricken from the record. The JUDGE agrees and advises the jury to do so. The Judge reminds a confused and ashamed Courtney that the incident in question involves the burning of his ex-step mother's BMW.

The Judge dismisses the case due to a lack of evidence but sternly chastises the Father warning him that he will be watched closely by the city's police force. He finishes by remarking that he is fooling no one.

Courtney exits the courtroom and sits on a bench next to Michael.

Don't you think he's done now? You heard the judge, he couldn't possibly get away with any more. He has to be done now Michael.

EXT. Courthouse — day

The Father catches up to the two teens and grabs Courtney by the arm. He admonishes him for his performance in the courtroom. He begins to slap Courtney until Michael puts himself in front of Courtney. Michael gets hit and falls to the ground. The Father calms down and appologizes to the two boys and makes some excuse about the pressure he's under.

The family has a nice quiet dinner together. The Father has kind words for his boys and slowly the two begin to warm up to him. They believe that this is the beginning of a new leaf. The dinner is over and Michael begins to wash the dishes. Courtney remains at the table and sighs in contentment. His father tell him he is proud of him and then asks him fetch an oil can and some rags from the garage. Courtney is rushed with fear and jumps from the table. The father yells to Michael to get some rope.

The father leaves and Courtney struggles to get free. Michael is holds Courtney with all his strength, terrified of what may happen to him if he gets free.

In the struggle a picture of their mother is knocked off of the fireplace mantle and shatters on the ground. The boys are stopped by this occurance and notice there is a large portion of the picture that is folded under itself. Courtney unfolds the paper to reveal that it is a newspaper article that reads...

All the pieces fall together. We realize that the father never won custody of the children. Courtney calls the ex-step mother and warns her that his father is on his way to her home.

A newscast shows a standoff between a local man and police forces. The unknown man is holding his ex-wife hostage and has set the house on fire. The police are powerless to save the man or the woman inside.
