JOE, an (eccentric but suspicious) elderly homeless man with white hair sticking straight out from his head, a long beard, and bright but dirty clothes,is digging through the trashcan, as though searching for something. His hand runs along the outside rim and he pulls out a wrinkled letter. JOE gazes at the letter, and when his eyes reach the bottom, his eyes widen and he lets out a cackling laugh, dancing a little jig.

SHERIFF THOMAS, wearing a full police uniform, hat, and badge, enters from UL and walks briskly along the sidewalk toward JOE.

SHERiff thomas

You! I know you.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

JOE quickly lets the paper fall from his hands onto the top of the pile of rubbish.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

SHERiff thomas (CONT'D)

I remember seeing you with Isabelle Lockley. Is there anything you can tell me about her?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 2 versions.

JOE

(Shifting uncomfortably.) She don't come 'round here no more.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 4 versions.

SHERiff thomas

Yes, that would be rather difficult seeing as she's missing, presumed dead.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

SHERIFF THOMAS pauses, waiting to gauge JOE's reaction.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

joe

Yeah, I heard that.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 2 versions.

SHERiff thomas

(Doubtfully.) And you don't know anything?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

JOE

I didn't say that.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

SHERiff thomas

What's your name?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

JOE

Joe.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

SHERiff thomas

Well, Joe, it would be very helpful for this case if you could give me some information. What was on that paper, for starters. You hid it rather quickly when I walked up. That have something to do with Isabelle?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 3 versions.

JOE

No I- what paper? I ain't got nothin' to tell you, Sheriff. Mighty fast to accusin', huh? Haven't you thought maybe the reason she's missin' is cause she don't wanna be found?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 4 versions.

SHERiff thomas

We're dealing with a missing minor, sir. I think it might put her parents at rest at least knowing she's safe. Right now some of our evidence points toward a kidnapping, so I'm not letting go of this investigation anytime soon.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 2 versions.

joe

Trust me, I sure as hell want her safe, too. That girl was always kind to me, and not many people are. She'd come and talk to me after The Takin'.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 6 versions.

sheriff thomas

The...taking? Her kidnapping?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

joe

No, no. That's what she called it when I lost everythin'. They was takin' my job, my house, my whole life. I told her 'bout it one day, and she said she wished she knew me 'fore it happened. So she could'a helped. I just...have reason to believe...she's just fine, Sheriff. Just fine.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 4 versions.

sheriff thomas

I'll need proof of that. Look, could I just see the letter, Joe? I'll bring it back, I'd just need to check it into evidence for a little while.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 2 versions.

joe

Nope. I'll letcha see it if I can keep it.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

sheriff thomas

All right.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

SHERIFF THOMAS reads the letter, and gasps in horror.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

sheriff thomas (CONT'D)

Joe, do you know what this says?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

joe

Well, sure. Isa wrote 'n told me she was safe. We always taped our notes to the outside rim of the trashcan, and I'd get that boy Ron over at the gas station to read it to me.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 2 versions.

sheriff thomas

Can you not read it yourself?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

joe

Of course I can read! I've been around long enough to learn, haven't I? It's just my eyesight's gotten so bad in my old age and I can't afford glasses. It's so blurry... but I know Isabelle Lockley's handwriting when I see it. That's her signature right there!

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014 3 versions.

JOE stabs the bottom of the letter.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

sheriff thomas

It is Joe, but I'm afraid this isn't a "just fine" letter. When did she leave this for you?

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

joe

I-I just found it, now. Why? You ain't gotta make such a fuss.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

SHERIFF THOMAS holds up a finger, indicating JOE to be quiet, and holds up a walkie talkie to his mouth. There's a burst of static.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

Sheriff thomas

Hurry, boys. I want a red alert looking for Isabelle Lockley in the Marvin Woods neighborhood. Her suicide letter was just found in Deering Park. Keep a special eye on drug stores and buildings. Careful, don't scare her off. If she's still alive, we'll be dealing with a very depressed and nervous girl. Otherwise, it's as we feared and this is a body search.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

JOE is fully crying at this point, and looks faint.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

joe

I told you she wasn't kidnapped.

Kaylin - on 05/22/2014

JOE and SHERIFF THOMAS run off stage in separate directions, calling Isabelle's name.
