Darkness. Lights up on a ratty blanket C stage. Fifteen-year-old DAVID shifts under the blanket then lies still, still covered except for his feet. He's not wearing shoes and his socks have holes in them. An extra, clearly dirty, shirt lies neatly folded at the base of the blanket. Lights expand to reveal the basement. Remain dim. The floor is gray concrete, splattered with paint in several places. The basement appears to be used for storage. UR is a pile of broken wooden furniture, including the remains of a wardrobe and a bed frame. D stage is littered with paint cans, some empty, bins, and books.A rickety stool is DL, an empty discarded water pitcher lying between its legs. Next to the stool is a cup of paintbrushes. A narrow set of stairs U along the back wall, extending off L. The floor and support beams of the stairs are covered in paintings depicting swastikas, bloody figures, and angry faced men with guns. In certain places, the violent paintings have been covered with brighter paintings such as flowers. A siren goes off in the distance, and flashing red lights are seen coming from the top of the stairs. He abruptly pauses, as though remembering something, then returns to C stage, sits on the bed and places his head in his hands.
