ext. noah's house - gate

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara and Mrs. Dyer are on their way to Noah's for tea. Mara points at the gate.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

It's this one.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

A camera swivels in their direction. Mrs. Dyer stares at Mara.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mrs. dyer

This is Noah's house?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

You can't even see it from the gate, just an outline behind the trees. The gate swings open and the car drives forward.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

ext. noah's house

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mrs. Dyer and Mara are greeted by ALBERT, the Shaw's butler, who takes the car from Mrs. Dyer. They walk up the stairs to the front door which swings open to RUTH SHAW herself.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mrs. dyer

(smiling)Dr. Shaw.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

ruth shaw

Please, call me Ruth. It's such a pleasure to meet you!

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

int. shaw mansion - foyer

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara and Mrs. Dyer step into the house. Ruby the vicious pug bounds towards Mara, snarling. Noah slowly saunters in but still manages to pick her up.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

(affectionately)Bad girl.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah kisses her on the head. Mara stands a good distance away. Mrs. Dyer and Ruth chatter among themselves.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Where's Mabel?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Occupied.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mrs. dyer

It is really such a pleasure to be able to finally meet Noah's family. We love having him around. Is your husband here?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

ruth shaw

I'm afraid David's in New York at the moment.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mrs. dyer

Maybe another time, then.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

ruth shaw

He would love that.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Clearly, Mrs. Dyer and Ruth were lying. Noah leans over to Mara and whispers in her ear.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

You know, this is rapidly becoming as painful as you indicated it would be.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Told you.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

(loudly)Right, then. I'm sure you ladies have much to discuss and would rather do so in privacy, yes?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mrs. Dyer and Ruth share a look.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mrs. dyer

Go on.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah hands Ruby to Ruth and takes Mara's hand.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

int. noah's room

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah shuts the door behind them. Mara stands in the center, taking in the sights and the window.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

What?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

I wish I could live here.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

No, you don't.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Fine. I wish I had your room.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

It's not a terrible consolation prize, I'll admit.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

I wish we could make out in your bed.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

As do I, but I'm afraid we have a ritual burning to conduct.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

It's always something.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Isn't it though?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah grabs the doll from his desk and they leave the room.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

int. empty room

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

The room is empty save for the fireplace and a few chairs covered in cloth. Noah hands Mara the doll and starts looking around the room. Mara drops the doll immediately onto one of the covered chairs.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

What are you doing?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I'm preparing to start a fire.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Don't you still smoke?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Not around your parents. But yes.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

You don't have matches on you?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

A lighter, usually.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

He looks up mid-crouch.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

My father had the fireplaces rewired for gas. I'm looking for the remote.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara approaches the fireplace; it looks pretty real to her.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Um, Noah?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

What?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

You sure it's gas?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah comes over, and lifts the screen away.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Apparently not. Shit.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

What?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

They might smell an actual fire all the way down there. I don't know.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

We'll think of something.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara picks up the doll with two fingers and holds it as far away from her in the front as possible.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

Light it up.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah considers this for a moment before shaking his head.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Wait here.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara drops the doll to the floor as Noah jogs out of the room. He comes back with lighter fluid and some matches. He crouches by the fireplace, douses the logs with some fluid, and strikes a match.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

Showtime.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara picks up the doll and tosses it into the fire. They crinkle their noses.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

What is that?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

It smells like...like burning hair.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah and Mara watch the fire consume the doll, limb by limb. Something is burning that definitely isn't cloth.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

Noah...

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I see it.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Is that -

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

It's paper.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Fuck. We have to put it out, hurry.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

It'll be gone by the time I bring back water.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Go anyway! Jeez.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah goes and Mara crouches down closer, trying to see the paper.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Move.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara swivels out of the way as Noah douses the flames. Mara reaches forward but Noah grabs her wrist.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

Careful.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

But -

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

There's nothing left but embers.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Whatever it was, it's gone now.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara's thoughts

What if it was something important? Something from my grandmother?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

These thoughts are read on Mara's face. Mara straightens and looks over the fire. There is something silver in the ashes.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

What is that?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

A button?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

There were no buttons.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara reaches forward again and Noah grabs her wrist again, shaking his head. He reaches forward into the ashes and picks it up.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

What the hell are you doing! It's hot!

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Have you forgotten?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

That you can heal? No. But doesn't it hurt?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah shrugs and puts the silver thing flat in his palm. It is a small line of silver, stamped in half - half is a feather, the other half is a dagger. Mara slowly pulls down Noah's collar. He is still. Noah is wearing a necklace with the exact same pendant.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

(quietly)Noah.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah doesn't move. He stares ahead. Mara needs to sit down; she lowers herself onto the floor. Noah still doesn't move.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

Noah.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

No response.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

NOAH.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah looks at her.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

Where did your pendant come from?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I found it. In my mother's things.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Ruth?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah shakes his head slowly.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

It was just after we'd moved here. I claimed the library for my room and had taken my guitar up when - I don't know. I went back downstairs feeling like I had to unpack, even though I was jet-lagged and exhausted and planned to pass out for a week. But I headed directly up to this one box; inside was a small chest filled with my mother's - Naomi's - silver. I began setting the silver aside for absolutely no reason at all and then took the chest apart. Beneath the drawer that held the knives, there it was.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah nods at the charm.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

I started wearing it that day.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah reaches down and helps Mara up, and they sit on a sheet-covered couch. He places the pendant in Mara's hands.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

Where did you get that doll?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

It was my grandmother's.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

But where did it come from?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

I don't-well, actually I had this dream. I was in a hut with a girl who sewed the exact doll for me, with the weird red stain and all because she cut her finger and it, well, stained the wrist -

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah stares.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

Sorry. I'm rambling. I never saw the charm, though. The girl never put it inside.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

It could have been sewn in later.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

You think - you think it really happened? You think it could be real?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah doesn't say anything.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

But if it was real, if it really happened -

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

(to self)Then it wasn't a dream. It was a memory.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

I've barely left the suburbs. I've never seen jungles and villages. How could I remember something I have never seen?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Genetic memory.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara's thoughts

Grandmother's symptoms. Grandmother's doll. Grandmother's memory?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

No, it's nonsense.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

What is?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah closes his eyes, as if speaking from memory.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

The idea that some experiences can be stored in our DNA and passed down to future generations. Some people think it explains Jung's theory of collective unconsciousness. (hint of a smile)I'm partial to Freud, myself.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Why do you know this?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I read it.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Where?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

In a book.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

What book?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

int. noah's room

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah scans the shelves.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I don't see it.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

What's it called?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

"New Theories in Genetics". By Armin Lenaurd.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara joins the search.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

You don't alphabetize.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Correct.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

How do you find anything?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I just remember, I suppose.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

You just...remember. There must be a thousand books here.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I have a good memory.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Photographic?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah shrugs.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

So THAT's why you never took any notes in school.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah glances at her, and amusedly shakes his head. Mara pulls out a thick, old, brown book.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

Score.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah looks confused.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I don't remember putting it there.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara sits down on his bed with it.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Not exactly light reading, is it?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Beggars can't be choosers.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Meaning?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

It was all I had on the flight from London back to the States.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

When was this?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Winter break. We went back to England to see my grandparents - my father's parents. I accidentally threw the book I was reading in my checked luggage, and this was in the seat pouch thing in front of me.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Doesn't seem like it would fit.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

First class.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara rolls her eyes.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Of course.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

My father took the jet.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara makes a face.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah (CONT'D)

I would wholly embrace and mirror your disdain, but I have to say, of all the useless garbage he bleeds money on, that's the one I'm not at all sorry about. No lines. No security misery. No rush.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

You don't have to take off your shoes or your jacket or-

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Be fondled by an overzealous TSA agent. You don't even have to show ID - my father employs the pilot and crew. We literally just show up at the private airport and walk on. It's extraordinary.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Sounds like it.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara flips open the heavy cover of the book.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I'll have to take you somewhere, sometime.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

I'm not even allowed to come to your house without adult supervision.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Patience, Grasshopper.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

Easy for you to say. What else does Mr. Lenaurd think?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara flips through some of the pages.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

I didn't bother to read through the whole thing; it was terminally dull. What you said just reminded me of it - the author believes that some experiences we've never had can be passed down genetically.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

(to self)Superman.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

noah

Beg your pardon?

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara

When Daniel was trying to help me help my fictional character, he asked if the thing she has - I have - was acquired or if it existed from the time she - I - was born. Spiderman or Superman.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Mara snaps the cover closed.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

mara (CONT'D)

I'm Superman.

happycola23 - on 03/13/2014

Noah looks amused.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

As delightful as I find that concept, I'm afraid that our unnatural attributes must have been acquired.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Why?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

How many times have you wished someone dead, Mara? Someone who cuts you off on the highway, et cetera?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Probably more than she should think about.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

(noncommittal)Hmm.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

And when you were little, you probably even screamed to your parents you wished they were dead too, yes?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Mara shrugs. Possibly.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah (CONT'D)

And they're still here. As for myself, my ability couldn't have gone unobserved as a kid; I had to get shots and things like everyone else. Surely someone would have noticed I could heal, no?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Wait.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

She leans forward.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara (CONT'D)

How did YOU realize you could heal?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

(bored)I cut myself, and there was no trace of it the next day. Anyway, it has to be acquired. Otherwise we would have noticed long before now.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

But you said you've never been sick -

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

What we SHOULD be thinking about is why the hell the same rather unusual pendant would be in my mother's chest of silver and sewn into your grandmother's creepy doll.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Okay. So your mother and my grandmother had the same jewelry.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

And hid it.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Mara examines the small silver pendant.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Can I see yours?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah hesitates for a fraction of a second and then lifts the black cord over his head and puts it in Mara's hand. She studies the two up close. They look the same, but something's different.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara (CONT'D)

They're mirror images.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah leans forward and looks.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

They are indeed.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

And they're not identical; they look homemade, judging slight imperfections. And the design is a little - it's a little crude, right? It reminds me of the block printed illustrations you find in old books. And the symbols -

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Fuck.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

What?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

I never bothered to think about it in that context.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah gets up and Mara hands him his necklace.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah (CONT'D)

I just saw it, knew it was my mother's, and wore it because it was hers. But you're right, it could mean something - especially since there's two.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

I was just going to say they remind me of the symbols on a family crest.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah stops mid-stride, and turns slowly.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

We are not related.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

I know, but -

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Don't even think it.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

I get the picture.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah sits at his desk and opens his laptop, googling.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

So, the preponderance of hits for 'feather symbol meaning' bring up the Egyptian goddess Ma'at. Apparently she judged the souls of the dead by weighing their hearts against a feather; if she deemed a soul unworthy, it was sent to the underworld to be consumed - by this bizarre crocodile-lion-hippopotamus creature, it seems.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

He shifts out of the way so Mara can see; she makes a face. It's definitely weird.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah (CONT'D)

Anyway, if the soul was good and pure, congratulations, you've earned a passage into paradise.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah starts typing again.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

What about dagger comma symbol?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Opened another tab already but alas, said search has generated not much.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Did you try 'feather and dagger symbol' together?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Indeed. Nothing there, either.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Noah shuts the laptop.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

How many hits did you say the feather thing got?

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Nine million or so. Give or take.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Mara sighs.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah (CONT'D)

(cheerfully)But most of the first ones were all to the Egyptian goddess. That's something.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Not...really.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Well, we're further than we were yesterday.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Yesterday when I woke up to find that I'd been sleepwalking.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

Point.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Yesterday when I was ready to blame my should-be-dead stalker for the creepy doll-in-underwear-drawer incident.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

I see where you're going with this.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

mara

Good. I was starting to worry you didn't care.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

Mara hands Noah her grandmother's pendant.

happycola23 - on 03/14/2014

noah

(coolly)Is that what you think. Why are you giving me this?

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

I don't want to lose it.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Noah looks at her for a second, and closes his fingers around the charm.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

I have someone looking into the Jude issue. A private investigator my father's worked with. He's trying to find out where he lives, which is proving difficult since he's completely off the grid, and apparently isn't stupid enough to use the illegal immigration channels for help.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Mara rubs her forehead.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

He was kind of stupid.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

Well, he's not acting like it.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

Maybe he has help?

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

I've considered it, but who besides you even knows he's alive?

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

(groaning)Another question.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Mara flops down on Noah's bed in defeat, then turns to look at him.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara (CONT'D)

why didn't you tell me you were looking for him?

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

(indifferently)I don't tell you everything.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

That stung.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah (CONT'D)

In any case, about the pendant - at least now we know that at some point, your grandmother and my mother crossed paths through whoever made them. I'll look through her things to see if I can find anything else.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Mara doesn't answer.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah (CONT'D)

Mara?

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Mara shakes her head.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

I shouldn't have burned the doll, Noah. I should have looked for a seam or something -

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

You couldn't have known.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

There was a piece of paper, too.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

I saw.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

It could have been the answer to all of this.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Noah tucks a strand of Mara's hair behind her ear.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

There's no point in worrying about it now.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

When would be a good time to worry about it?

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

noah

No need to get snippy.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

Mara lets out a breath and bites her lip.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara

Sorry. I just - I'm worried about tonight. I don't want to go to sleep.

happycola23 - on 03/27/2014

mara's thoughts

I didn't know where I'd be when I woke up.
