Pre-titles sequence. Sandy Forbes, in khaki tee and slacks is brushing teeth, humming ‘Johnny Cope’, opening bedroom curtains to beginnings of a winter sunrise reflected from the forth river and bridge. Visible in the foreground is Inverlour Whitesands beach where Helen Birrell is walking Sapper while Karen Laidlaw and Jay Slater huddle on the promenade wall.

grace forbes (o.O.V)

(Muffled, from under duvet) Too early!

SANDY FORBES

It's not, you know

GRACE FORBES (O.O.V)

Too cold then!

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago 2 versions.

sandy forbes

I'm off in five. You want a lift?

(Moans) No. I'll just get the train

sandy forbes

You sure?

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago

grace forbes

Yeah. Headache.

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago

sandy forbes

Heh. Serves you right.

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago 2 versions.

SANDY Roots under the duvet for a kiss, then prods CD player to life, beating a hasty retreat as the massed pipes and drums of the 1ST BN Queen's Own Highlanders issue forth.

grace forbes (o.O.V)

(Groans) Bastard!

3 EXT. INVERLOUR WHITESANDS BEACH HOGMANAY 2013 08:45 3

HELEN BIRRELL is wrestling with SAPPER the dog who has retrieved a dead gull. In foreground KAREN LAIDLAW, white, thin faced, JAY SLATER, mixed race huddle, while LILY SLATER, mixed race 6 year old collects shells while singing loudly.

karen laidlaw

Told you it was worth it.

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago

KAREN waves acknowledgement to HELEN. SAPPER is trying to hack something up.

jay slater

Yeah, sure. It’s freezing and the sun has forgotten to come up. That would pass as an apocalypse in some cultures. Serves me right for moving north of the Arctic circle.

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago

karen laidlaw

Lily's having a nice time.

jay slater

Of course she is. She doesn't feel the cold. Kids don't.

karen laidlaw

You'll adjust. I did, when came back up. Only took...

jay slater

A year or so! You used to moan about it all the time!

karen laidlaw

Only cos I was missing you.

jay slater

Well, I missed you too, and I'm happy I'm here. Only... maybe we should like, do a sun dance, or sacrifice something. That dog maybe. He sounds like he's on the way out.

karen laidlaw

Don’t! Helen and Doug have had him forever. He's as much a regular as any of the old guys propping up the hotel bar. (beat) Speaking of propping up bars, and opportunities for us to do so, Mum'll be over about five..

jay slater

She's OK with that?

karen laidlaw

She's delighted. Says her and Lily are going to have their own secret party while we're out. Anyway, I'd better run. (SAPPER is still hacking away in the background)

LILY walks over to HELEN BIRRELL and SAPPER. KAREN LAIDLAW AND JAY SLATER walk over to join them.

lily SLATER

Hiya Mrs Birrell. Are you on holiday too?

helen birrell

Yes Sweetie. They shut the school for Christmas.

lily SLATER

So you have to stay at home?

helen birrell

Yes.

lily SLATER

Is your doggie sick?

karen laidlaw

Hi Helen. Sapper OK?

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago 2 versions.

helen birrell

Eh, well...

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago

SHOT - HELEN, KAREN and JAY looking down at beach in disgust and SAPPER continues to hack, then whine.

helen birrell (CONTD)

Oh my. Oh dear.

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago 2 versions.

lily SLATER

Yuck!

jay slater

That can't be good. Oh, don't look Lily.

karen laidlaw

Not generally. Is the vet open?

BarbaraGribbon - two years ago 2 versions.

helen birrell

On Hogmanay? I don't think so. I'll... I’ll get him back to the hotel. There’s a leaflet with an emergency number. Dougie’ll know where it is.

HELEN BIRRELL picks up SAPPER and runs up to SHORE ROAD, narrowly avoiding SANDY FORBES'S car.

sandy forbes

(Getting out of car) Christ, Helen, I... Are you alright?

helen birrell

Sorry Sandy. Can't stop. Wee man's no well.

HELEN runs off up street, leaving SANDY perplexed. Cue TITLES as he drives off, MONTAGE through FIFE countryside, over FORTH ROAD BRIDGE, as he approaches, then drives into EDINBURGH CASTLE via SENTRY POST.
