"Childhood", an essay by Madelaine Hoptry...Ever since I was three years old I wanted to be an actress. Any other dream, aspiration, or prediction of the future was practically unheard of. Thats the only thing I wanted out of the world plain and simple. I wasn't going to ask for anything else out of life, just this one thing, this one dream: Just please...please just let me be a goddamn actress. But I've grown up...My childhood is over and I've moved on to at least an early stage of maturity. Now every time I think of that dream, I get scared. Will I succeed? Will I have enough money? Will I be starving and miserable my entire life? And I don't know. I don't know the answers to these questions and it scares me. It scares the living shit out of me. I mean, this is it. This is my one shot to have a successful life and I want to be a god damn movie star? I mean, come on, how much hope can I have in that? I don't know, but I'm learning to live with it. I'm learning that my only dream in life is to be alive. Just alive enough to talk with my friends, or enjoy a cigarette, or wake up and think "Today's going to be great." But like I was saying, I'm learning. At least I'm learning something in this shithole.
