I just gad a thought regarding how to deal with the religion vs. science of robots issue. Some religious literalists believe in creationism -- that the world must have been created by an "intelligent designer" e.g. God. This "watchmaker" would have designed the world so that its outcome is known... or that the ending is already a forgone conclusion.
But a genre like sci-fi is not that far from similar outcomes. What is artificial intelligence if it is not designed, intelligently. And that is, perhaps, in this film's universe the underlying theme: is religion the same as science and vice-versa? it is 2009 and we have made much progress in neuro-biology, or in studying and understand the brain.
Google is a company that is deeply interested in understanding and predicting behavior (targeted ads based on the data they have on you, etc.). Perhaps a company like Google has indeed "figured it out."
The motivation for Kate to "pretend to be a robot is.......
maybe she is one.
