Project

Outline | Scenes | Screenplay

1. Summer Afternoon Opening

Normal summer afternoon. The three main characters are hanging out together and swimming in Bryan's backyard. They're having a good time, and this sets up some of the interaction between all of them. They've known each-other since middle or high school, but they're home from college now. Friendly banter.

2. Grabbing Food

They get out of the pool to make some food on the patio/porch/whatever. Bryan goes inside to grab some hot dogs to put on the barbecue. John makes a sarcastic remark like "oh yeah, you guys just fucking love wieners" We're setting up that these guys are really comfortable with each-other and that it's like the last time they hung out was yesterday, not like they're long-lost buddies catching up.

3. Snarky Comment by Sister

Little sister and her friends walk past, and the sister snarkily says something like "why don't you ever hang out with any girls, you guys are so weird" while her friends giggle. She isn't mean, but she has a feisty attitude.

4. Bryan Zoning Out in Thought

Soliloquy voiceover: Bryan. Probably over a slow-mo long take with fast pans between the characters as they're being mentioned.
Yeeeeah… that's my sister. And that's me, Bryan Zolewski. These are my two best friends, John Ackermann and Chris Dalton. I've known them since high school. We're home from college now, and I'm having a great time, but I guess you could say it is a bit of...

[reluctantly as he looks down at his hot dog]

...a sausagefest.

[beat]

We've always been a close group, but I guess you could say that group has always been a bit out of place. I don't think any of us ever saw the need to try to be someone else to fit in... so we didn't. It wasn't a problem though, if you didn't count being picked on, not being invited to parties, or being passed over by girls like you had a giant red X painted on your forehead in lamb's blood. [deadpan, earnest] All in all, they were good times. But I guess I thought things would just magically change when I got to college. Cool people, crazy parties, maybe even a few girls… I just wonder when that's gonna happen.

At this point, he sort of begins to look like he's zoning out or gazing off wistfully into the distance.

5. John Interrupts Bryan's Thoughts

Only to be interrupted by the shot returning to full speed and John obnoxiously trying to get his attention by going "Dude… dude… are you done?" almost as if he was intentionally interrupting Bryan's internal monologue. He continues, though, by pointing at Bryan's half eaten hot dog and repeating "Are you done with that? Come on, let's get back in the pool." Comic timing is very important here.

6. Chris Freaks Out About Getting Into the Pool on a Full Stomach

Chris freaks out at John's suggestion, calling him crazy for suggesting the "gastrointestinal suicide" of getting in the pool right after eating. He might say something like "I don't want to cramp up and drown" as he flatly refuses to get back in the water for another hour.

7. Three Staring Forward

Quick cut to all three of them sitting uncomfortably close together, very bored looking, staring off into space. Someone breaks the silence by commenting on their boredom, prompting a discussion on what they could do. A couple of stupid ideas are thrown out and shot down before one of them suggests going to see a movie, and another builds on that to ask if the latest spy movie is out. The third adds that yes, it just came out some small number of days ago. They get set on going.

8. Getting Ready for the Movies

The three guys get ready to go to the movies, pile into the car, buy tickets, and go into the movie theater lobby. This could be done in a faux-serious action style sequence with quick cuts back and forth to add some understated humor, like some of the scenes in Hot Fuzz. Or we can just cut to the interior of the theater. Some idle chatter over as the characters walk from the lobby to the hallway where the theater would be.

9. 'Showing' the 'Movie'

Some device has got to be used here to show passage of time, since we can't really do the whole movie within a movie thing successfully or without infringing copyright. Maybe transition to a wide shot of the outside of the theater, time compressed (cutting between shots at different times of day showing some solar movement over those ~2hrs) and with selected audio clips from the 'movie' over.

10. Three Go to Eat

Eventually zoom up in on the exit, and track the characters as they're walking out to the parking lot and talking about how awesome the movie was. One of them mentions that they're hungry, so another responds by suggesting they just walk across the street to [name of restaurant].

11. Enter Burger Restaurant, Attractive Girl Shows Up

They walk across the parking lot/street to a burger place they frequented when they lived in town. They walk in, sit down, and continue chatting while each of them grabs and looks at a menu in a somewhat cursory manner. An attractive, young girl walks over to them to take their drink order. Bryan doesn't notice her much at first, but then experiences a flash of recognition and tries to greet her by name, i.e. "Staci..? is that you??"

Last edited by shamrockst, two years ago. This scene is unlocked. view details

12. Staci's Introduction

Confused, and perhaps slightly annoyed or at least skeptical at first, she references her nametag and says "yeah..?" (as in "yeah… and?"). Bryan, flustered, backpedals and tries her full name or maybe her high school, and then says "Didn't we go to school together?" before he reintroduces himself and his friends.

13. Staci Remembers Them, Leaves to Get Drinks

Staci reacts favorably, as in "ohhhh! that's right!" and says she remembers them, but fuzzily. She reveals they never really hung out, but passed each-other once or twice in the hallway. She then excuses herself to grab their drinks.

Last edited by shamrockst, two years ago. This scene is unlocked. view details

14. John Mocks Bryan RE: Staci

After she leaves, John, somewhat awkwardly and suggestively, winks/nudges at Bryan to make fun at him. Bryan gets defensive and acts confused, saying "what are you talking about? I recognized her so I tried to make conversation!" John purposefully refuses to buy it, and even Chris says that she's pretty attractive. This prompts Bryan to reveal that he always had kind of a little crush on her, but had sort of forgotten about it (I mean, he didn't even recognize her at first).

Last edited by shamrockst, two years ago. This scene is unlocked. view details

15. Staci Returns, Makes Conversation

Staci comes back, acting friendly, and hands each one of them their drinks while Bryan (now obviously trying to make a good impression) says something like "so when did you start working here?" or "I didn't know you worked here." She responds that her parents own the place and she needed a job for the summer, so they just let her work there. This would ideally lead in to her asking what they'd been up to. Bryan would tentatively respond with something like "um, just taking it easy I guess" and Chris could then chime in by mentioning the movie they just went to.

16. Staci Gushes Over Spy Movie Role, is "Hard to Get"

She responds excitedly, talking about how much she's been looking forward to that movie. She talks about the lead actor and gushes over him a little bit (like how girls gush over the stupid vampires from Twilight or whatever, but less lame), and mentions how she doesn't really normally like that actor but finds him irresistible in the spy/secret agent role. This is extremely important, as it begins the germination of the idea of trying to become something of a secret agent in Bryan's head. It's definite foreshadowing. She then gets herself back on track: "Anyway, do you guys know what you want to order?" This cuts off the conversation there and lets her be seen as aloof and hard to get.

17. Idea of Being a Spy Explored

Chris, Bryan, and John all order and Staci leaves to put the order in. The guys start talking about the movie again, mentioning how they didn't expect a girl like Staci to like something like that. Chris talks about how awesome it would be to be the main character, just for a few days. John scoffs and acts as the devil's advocate, saying he'd get killed within the first 24 hours. However, Bryan keeps going with it, playing to childhood aspirations: "Didn't you ever wonder what it was like to be a spy? Didn't you ever think about joining the CIA and, like, going to Europe or something?" to which John responds (somewhat defensively/sarcastically) "Sure, I guess." Bryan continues, asking what happened to those thoughts, and John retorts back "I turned fourteen, man"

18. Realities of Being a Spy, Skepticism

Bryan continues to press the subject, thinking out loud. He asks something about why people don't go out and do stuff like that. Some sample dialog: J: "They do, they're called spies." B: "Well, how do you get into that? If it's such an awesome lifestyle, why don't we just do it ourselves?" J: "What do you mean, like go to f*cking Russia and get our c*cks chopped off? Maybe we should all grow dirty Gandalf [or pedophile] beards, read the Koran, and take a g*ddamn road trip to Afghanistan over the weekend too. I don't know about you, but that sounds exactly like what I want to do with my time." B: "Well, there's got to be a way." J: "Alright man, you're crazy, but go ahead and keep thinking that" This needs some more embellishment and cleanup to be convincing, but basically it ought to be Bryan tossing around the idea of actually becoming a spy and playing with the concept of how to actually get into that business while the other two remain hugely skeptical.

19. All Go Home, Letdown

They get their meals, finish up eating, then walk back to the car and head home. Chris and John head back to their respective families while Bryan goes back inside to watch TV (for that: CU on Bryan with TV light coming in from front, more spy movie sound over, perhaps from classic out-of-copyright action films.

20. Bryan Goes to Bedroom, Restless

He goes back into his room and glances sort of sadly at a collection of old Ian Fleming novels on his bookshelf. He then lies down on his bed and starts thinking: an aerial of him on the bed tossing and turning would go well here.

21. Decision to Pursue Spy Life, Application Submission

Bryan eventually gets up and walks over to his computer. You see him turn it on and go to the CIA webpage, and start printing out an application. He turns on a desk lamp, picks up a pen, and starts working on it. All this time, there should be a voiceover of his thoughts: "When I was a kid, my role model wasn't Superman or Luke Skywalker or any of those jackasses. It was James Bond. And who hasn't wanted to grow up to be just like their hero? What happens in life to make us give up those dreams, though… why don't people follow through on them? Maybe I'm crazy, but I still want to be a spy. Somehow. I don't really know where to start, but this seems like as good a place as any. I mean, even 007 had to get into the business somehow, right?"

22. "Waiting for Reply" and Boredom Montage

Waiting for reply montage showing Bryan checking the mail, email, getting excited when he gets a text, etc. and showing Chris and John chilling (Chris reading books, John watching TV/playing video games-things one might do if his friends are unavailable/busy) and getting really bored. Eventually you can tell Bryan is starting to give up.

23. Sketchy Car

Until one night where Bryan in just about to go to sleep when he hears a low rumbling outside his house. He checks out the window and it's a car driving past sort of sketchily, really slowly. He's a bit confused but doesn't think much of it until it keeps happening for a couple more nights.

Last edited by shamrockst, two years ago. This scene is unlocked. view details

24. Find Out What the Sketchy Car is Doing

He calls his friends to get them to come over and help to figure out what it might be at this point. They haven't heard from him in a while, so they ask something like "Dude, where have you been, we thought you were dead." Bryan's a bit freaked out and also perhaps a little bit hopefully excited that it might be the CIA doing some surveillance on him. Chris and John come over a bit before when the car has been passing by. Chris stays with Bryan in the house and John goes to park his car down the street and wait for the car.

25. Suspenseful Car Tail... It's an Old Lady

John waits a block or two before Bryan's house for the car to pass him, and then starts following it. This should be suspenseful. It goes around the corner and maybe another block or two before it slows down greatly and pulls into a driveway. An old lady gets out of the car. John sees it, and is both amused and exasperated. "(are) you fuckin' serious?" He calls Bryan.

26. John Calls Bryan

The conversation could go something like this: J: "Yeah. Bryan. I see your suspect. It's a g*ddamn old lady. She drove down around the corner about a block and a half. She probably can't fuckin' see, that's why she's driving so slow" B: (flustered/stammering) "Well… why haven't I ever seen her before this then?" J: "I don't know, she probably started hitting on a gardener and got kicked out of her nursing home, God bless her. And who goes around spying on people at 9:30, man? This is a joke, I'm coming back."

27. More Mocking of Bryan, Eventual Apology

John gets back to Bryan's house and mocks him incessantly for freaking out about nothing. Bryan feels a bit stupid and gets somewhat depressed and pissy, sort of throwing a fit. John apologizes eventually, "alright, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, let's go get a shake," sort of friendly condescension, but it's sincere and Bryan goes for it so they all head over to the burger place to chill.

28. Back to Burger Place, Hoping for Something Interesting

Once they're there, Bryan is still mostly quiet, probably still feeling a bit dumb. Chris notices and asks him "Dude, what's up? It was just an old lady in a car, it's no big deal. That's a good thing." Bryan makes some attempt to agree, but reveals he was actually kind of hoping it would have been something interesting.

29. Spy Stuff Again, Staci Redux

John chimes in at this point: "Oh not this spy stuff again, you're still riding that train?" sort of belittling him. Bryan gets defensive again and shoots a glare over at John, but Staci comes in at this point to take their order. She greets them in a good mood, acting very friendly/welcoming them back as she's getting a bit more comfortable with them since she's seen them before.

30. Staci in Good Mood, Bryan Starting to Like Her

John says something like "We're gonna have a round of chocolate shakes, on me tonight" and pats Bryan on the back. Staci's eyes might pass over Bryan as she scans the table and says something funny/almost flirty like "ooh, high rollers!" Bryan laughs just a little bit too hard, and Staci gives him a confused/odd look but still smiles and might giggle just slightly as she says "Alright, I'll be right back with those." We want to show she's somewhat amused or endeared, not put off.

31. More Mocking from John Starts Small Verbal Fight

John starts to make fun of Bryan again about Staci, "Smooth move, putting the mack on!" Bryan retorts with an unamused "What?" Here's an idea for some dialog:
J: "All I'm saying is it's about time."
B: "Shut up, when was the last time you had a girlfriend anyway."
J: (deflecting/affronted but sincere) "Oh come on man, you remember what happened with Marlene back in Arizona! I'm still not over that. We said we wouldn't mention it!"
B: "That was two years ago, John, and you met her on the Internet. You gotta move on.
[beat]
B: (cont'd) "OK, all I'm saying is just look at these secret agents from the movies. They're suave, they get the girls, they go to these elaborate parties wearing suits and sh*t. I mean, why wouldn't you want to be like them."
C: (adding) "Yeah, that's what I was saying the other day."
B: "You don't have to actually do any spying to lead that kind of lifestyle. Maybe we just need to clean up and try to play the part and we'll figure it out."
J: (reluctantly acquiescing) "Alright, alright, I guess."

32. Suit Shopping

Cut to a new day on the interior of a Nordstrom or some other similar upscale store that sells fine clothing and suits. Pan around and land on John and Bryan, as John starts saying something like "I can't believe you dragged us here." Bryan responds "Will you calm down, look at Chris, he's having a great time." Pan over or cut to Chris just playing with some of the random clothing accessories like scarves or sunglasses or whatever. Bryan pats John on the back and says "Come on, we're all going to try on some suits, alright? It'll be fine. You could use something nice to wear, we're gonna go out tonight." He agrees to give it a shot.

33. John Warming to the Idea

They all walk over to the suit section and pick out something. They get measured and sized up for jackets and pants. Bryan picks something modern, Chris picks something traditional and a little more formal, maybe the quintessential British three-piece. John picks something a little offbeat, like a graham-colored plaid suit or something like that. He comes out of the well-appointed fitting room and walks over to the area with mirrors all around and something of a pedestal to stand on, looks himself up and down and spins around, and shouts "Hey, guys, come out here and check this out. I look good." He starts warming to the idea of trying stuff on. The other two guys come out in varying states of dress-Bryan with an untucked and almost-fully-buttoned shirt along with a loosened tie around his neck, and Chris with pants, a shirt, and a vest. John says "I'm starting to like this idea. I'll be right back, I'm going to see what other shirts they have." and goes back outside to do so.

34. Getting Accessories

Chris and Bryan come out, fully suited, to join him. They all start looking at the accessories, like tie clips and cufflinks and sunglasses. John starts trying on various types of sunglasses, some ridiculous some pretty cool. He eventually settles on a dark brown pair of navigators. He thinks they look badass and is loving it (but isn't entirely serious, he's playing it up) Chris, the most formally decked out of all of them, eventually settles on a pair of gold seahorse cufflinks that he sees and has to have. Bryan checks out the different scents and looks at the watches, settling on a nice, substantial entry level one (something in the ~$200 price range).

35. Leaving the Store

All of them check out and walk confidently out of the store. We see the obligatory slow motion shot of the trio side by side, striding purposefully toward the car in their new suits. John and Bryan get into the front seats, and Chris jumps into the back, expectantly asking "So, what now?"

36. No Idea... Need for "Base of Operations"

None of them initially have any ideas. We see them all sort of deflate a little bit. Eventually, John starts suggesting some crazy shit like breaking into an abandoned mall and Bryan asks what that has to do with anything. Chris ends up seizing on that idea, saying John does have a point… kind of… and that they need to set up some sort of "base of operations" somewhere. He explains they need some place they can go and talk about stuff that is private and expendable-somewhere that can't be traced and that isn't where they live.

37. Office Scouting, then Storage Unit

Bryan thinks that maybe they can get an office, so they try to look somewhere up on their phones. They pick a couple of places to start and head over to them. The first one is already all rented out, the second and subsequent places they go to are all increasingly expensive and require long contracts. They start driving home, and we have a shot of them passing a storage park with their car. Right after they go off-screen, we hear the driver's voice over: "Wait a second…" as they make a quick u-turn and pull into the lot. We see them park and walk into the office.

38. Renting the Unit

They wait for a shopkeeper, and eventually one comes out. They inquire about how much it'll cost them to get a unit, and he says it depends on what they want to put in it-they have different sizes. They respond saying maybe just a car, a table, and a couple of chairs. He says they'll probably need a (whatever size) and quotes them a number that is at least a factor of ten lower than even the cheapest of all the other places. They ask if that's the price with a yearly contract, and receive a response that no, they only do month to month. They then ask if it has air conditioning and if it's secure. The proprietor responds, saying that there are gates and metal doors with digital code locks, and that the front gate opens at 6am and closes at 9pm. This prompts them to ask if there's any way to get 24 hour access, which is met with a suspicious "what for?" by the person behind the counter. They respond with something like "well, we want to get the table and chairs out of the house, but we might need it late in the evenings once in a while if we're throwing a party or something" and that they "like to take the car out for a spin early in the morning sometimes." This is enough to allay the shopkeeper's worries, and he indicates he understands and that they should have just told him. He says he can get them a special code for the gate that will let them come and go as they please, and they all look at each-other, conveying muted excitement and mutual assent. One of them gets out his wallet and says "Well, I think this is the place." He leaves a significant tip ($20?).

39. Sealing the Deal

Whoever handed over the first month's rent signs a contract ceremoniously, and is handed a small, folded piece of paper with the codes to the gate, the unit number, and the combination for the unit written down on it. He shakes hands with the person helping them, then they walk back outside. We track with them as they're leaving, and John says "now all we need is a folding table, some chairs, a poker set, and a bottle of scotch" happily.

40. Playing Poker, Looking Dignified

Cut to all three of them playing Texas Hold 'em. They're in the middle of a game, everything looks pretty put together. They even got a cheap decanter for the liquor, some glassware, and a small bucket of ice. A bowl of cashews or chex mix sits on the table. You can see a floor lamp and a couple of retro posters on the wall, maybe a whiteboard or a map of the area as well. There is a cot angled in one of the corners to be used as a bench or somewhere to lie down on. Maybe there is a mini fridge somewhere in there, too. John laughs as he looks at his cards and says "You guys are fucked." He reaches for a cigar he apparently bought, and gestures to Bryan to get him to light it. Close up on the cigar being lit as John asks Bryan why he got the lighter anyway, to which Bryan replies "I dunno, I just like fire. You're just shitting us." as he takes a drink.

41. Game Over, Decide to Go Find Something to Do

Bryan and Chris went all in trying to call his bluff. John has three aces and takes both of them. The game over, Bryan comes in saying "Alright, so we should probably find something to do tonight." Chris suggests looking in the newspaper for something interesting, like Sherlock Holmes did. John starts to object but Bryan shuts him down, asking if he has any better ideas. He doesn't. They leave the storage area and decide to go to a bookstore to grab a periodical and find out what's happening around town. As they're leaving, they encounter a random old cowboy dude loading a bunch of guns into his unit. He calls them out, saying "Damn kids." loud enough for them to hear. As they turn around and notice him, he looks them dead in the eye and says "Don't think I don't know what's going on here. I see what you're doing." ominously. They shrug him off as crazy, perhaps with John retorting, and then leave.

42. Sit Down in Cafe, Read About Gala, Get Aliases

They sit down at a coffee shop or cafe with a local newspaper and begin to thumb through the front and metro sections. They run through a couple of different possibilities trying to find something to do, but all of them are shot down for various reasons. Eventually, Chris spots a short blurb about a gala that his parents were invited to--he saw the invitation. The other two are very excited about the idea, but Chris calms them down a bit saying they're going to have to come up with some sort of cover and a good story because they aren't on the guest list. Bryan loves this. Chris takes the lead and gets them to agree to go get a mailbox, fake phone numbers, and business cards, and to stop by Chris' house to grab the invites and other stuff. They try to settle on names, throwing out whatever comes to the top of their heads like "Chuck Norris," "Indiana Jones," and "Andrew Jackson." Eventually Chris just runs and grabs a book from a nearby shelf or table and picks names from it. It's Dan Brown's "Digital Fortress" and Chris, John, and Bryan get the names Chad Brinkerhoff, David Becker, and Greg Hale, respectively. They decide to break off and get everything taken care of, then meet back up at Chris' house.

43. Regroup and Head to Benefit

They regroup. Bryan is sitting outside in his car with John, and they call Chris. Chris' house has a very impressive facade. We see inside as he picks up and tells the others he just arrived a few minutes before they did. He tells Bryan to wait a second as he gets the invitations and grabs a square envelope off of a table, then stops and runs into his room to throw a few inscrutable things into a nice weekender bag and his jacket pocket haphazardly before running outside with it. As he's getting into the car, Chris asks if they got everything and Bryan hands him a small stack of black business cards, saying "Just like you asked. I have to say, they do look nice." They drive off, headed for the benefit.

44. Driving Up to the Event and Getting Past the Guards

As they pull up to the event, they notice an abundance of fancy cars and older, obviously wealthy people. They drive past and park in an inconspicuous area, then walk back. We see them walking up to the entrance to the venue when they are stopped by a couple of security guards. The dialog might be as follows:
Guard 1: "Hey, hold on, you guys look a little young to be wandering around here. This is a private event."
Bryan starts to talk.
Bryan: "Sir…"
Chris interrupts him
Chris: "I'll handle this. Check your guest list. Chad Brinkerhoff."
Guard 1 does so.
Guard 1: "I'm sorry, you're not on it."
Chris responds, quickly and firmly: "I know that. You want to know why? We didn't bother to RSVP because I figured we'd have something better to do, but at the last minute we decided to be charitable. Do you know who I am?"
The security guard acts bewildered and somewhat taken aback.
Guard 1: "Look, without some ID and an invitation, I can't… [let you guys in]"
Chris: "We have an invitation right here. And here's my card, just Google me. Are you going to let us in now, or do we have to make a few calls?"
Guard 1: "Uh…"
Guard 2: (cutting him off) "We're sorry about the inconvenience, sir, go right ahead. It won't happen again"
He ushers them through. As the three are going out of earshot, you hear the guards arguing hushedly:
Guard 1: "What the hell was that??"
Guard 2: "Are you kidding? All those internet millionaires are that age. They probably just got bought out by Google or something. You wanna lose your job?"

47. Drink Orders

After they return to their table with a bit of food, a waiter comes by and takes their drink order. John takes the lead, ordering a white russian, then Bryan follows by ordering simply a rum and sprite. Chris tries to order a cranberry juice, but they won't let him get away with it so he orders a very complex, Bond-esque martini. The dialog should be as follows:
Chris: "Alright, alright. (turning to waiter) I'll have three measures of Gordon's, one measure of Stolichnaya, half a measure of absinthe, but no more-it's very particular. Shake it and finish with a twist of lime."
Waiter: "I'm so sorry, we've just run out of Gordon's. (offering) We have Tanqueray and--"
Chris: "(cutting him off) Even better. Tanqueray it is."
The waiter nods.
Waiter: "So that'll be a white russian, a rum and sprite, and an absinthe-tini."
Chris: "(correcting) Absinthe. Martini. If you have to, you can call it a Green Vesper."
Waiter: "(somewhat impressed) Very good sir. I'll get right on that."
The waiter then leaves to put in their order.

48. Trying to Find Restroom, Encounter Sketchy Conversation

The other two are a bit taken aback. It's clear Chris is actually more at home in this environment than they are. The drinks come, and they have a few sips over some conversation before Chris excuses himself to use the restroom. He can't find it, so he wanders around through some hallways looking for it. He ends up catching bits of a suspicious conversation from a side room and tries to listen in. Work in a suspicious-sounding "He knows too much" line and/or a "We have to take care of it (him?)". They also have to reveal some sort of location-"the old factory off of 190" or perhaps "the abandoned dam off of fifth street." One of the parties starts walking out, so Chris starts away but is called out with a stern "Hey!". He says he's looking for the restroom, and the suspicious person points him to it while still looking menacing and scrutinizing Chris to either memorize his face, try to recognize him, or just ascertain whether he's telling the truth. He stays still as Chris leaves quickly.

49. Rushing Back to Table

Chris freaks out and rushes back to the table after he splashes water on his face cursorily in the bathroom. Initially, they think he's making it up but he produces a recorder in his jacket pocket that picked up the conversation. John wants to stay (for obvious reasons) but Bryan also insists on it because it would look suspicious to just flee immediately. John says he's going to go get another drink and wanders off.

50. Time Compression, Exit, Being Watched

Chris and Bryan sit at the table, conversing. Crossfade between shots of them eating, talking, laughing, then resume normal time as Bryan starts wondering aloud where John is. They decide to get up and go looking for him, and eventually they stumble upon him in a conversation, complementing some random woman. They catch his attention, and he excuses himself. He is slightly tipsier than either John or Chris. Chris indicates they should go now. As they head towards the exit, John tries to argue otherwise because he is having a good time, but is overruled (though he follows them absentmindedly anyway). Right as they're leaving, we get an ominous shot of the guy who Chris ran into watching them.

51. Back to Car, Review Audio, Head to Location

All three walk quickly back to the area where they parked and get in the car. On the way, Chris says they have to go find out what the guys back at the event were talking about. John balks at the idea, saying that Chris was the one saying they had to get out of there in the first place, so why would he want to put them in the line of fire again. Bryan backs Chris up and they start going over the audio again (ignoring John), and Bryan tries halfheartedly to offer up a couple of alternative explanations, but then agrees that there really isn't anything it could be that isn't sinister. They key in on the location mentioned and try to figure out where it might be, perhaps calling up aerial maps via Chris' laptop connected to a wireless card or tethered phone, and end up picking out a ballpark area where they might be able to get access from. They agree to go stake it out and drive toward the area to inspect it visually. John whines, saying "Aw, this is bullshit" but doesn't protest any further.

52. Come Up on Area, Plan Action, Sneak In

They slow down as they approach the area where the target might be, using GPS to figure out their relative position. They watch out on the sides of the road for somewhere inconspicuous they can park that won't be a likely spot for anyone else to pick or be suspicious of, then develop a plan to get to the area they need to get to (which may involve rushing through an open field stealthily and climbing a fence or hiking through some brush). Once they find a suitable spot, they park and try to conceal their vehicle as much as possible. They get out and stand at the "precipice," surveying their surroundings and trying to reconcile them with their mental plans. John says "Okay, so how the hell are we going to do this again?" and Bryan makes hand gestures summing up their earlier plan, then starts running. John sarcastically remarks "Oh, great, that helps." before trying to do what Bryan signed, and Chris starts running too but stops and says "Oh shit, I forgot my bag" as he stops to run back and get it. He runs doubly fast to catch up and meets up with the other two crouching and waiting for him.

53. Pick Vantage Point & Settle In, Boredom Time Compression, Hear Something

Bryan, Chris, and John wind up where they need to be, and start scoping the area out for good vantage points, ways someone could come up on them, and plausible routes for their marks to take coming in. They then go make up a nest and attempt to conceal and secure themselves the best they can. They huddle together, watching in different directions. Chris identifies a choke point where someone would have to come through if they were coming up on them and hides a wireless motion sensor nearby so they would have some warning. He then pulls out night vision binoculars and powers them on. Bryan remarks "Oh sweet!" and John follows up quickly with an incredulous "Why do you have those?" to which Chris nonchalantly responds "I dunno, I got them at Target" and shrugs as if it's no big deal while he goes back to his business. A time compression sequence then ensues, showing the group rotating tasks, getting more and more bored and tired, and eventually starting to feel like nothing's going to end up happening at all. John keeps complaining and trying to get them to go, and Bryan and Chris counter him saying they should stay-at one point, Bryan could say "Even just being here, in this situation, is the most interesting thing that has happened to any of us in the past six months. And you want to just give up and go home now?" Eventually, though, even Bryan starts to give up and gets ready to throw in the towel. He might look at his watch and say "Alright, Chris. It's [three o'clock?] already. I don't think they're coming." to which Chris could respond "just a few more minutes" right as they start to hear something. They quickly shut up, get back into position, and start scanning the area and listening intently with the aid of a burst of adrenaline.

55. Get Out of There

John, Chris, and Bryan all realize things have totally changed. What started out as crashing a party landed them in the middle of something obviously dangerous. John might say something simple but heavy like "Holy shit." Bryan might finish the thought by saying "They just… killed that guy" with some disbelief evident in his voice, and then continue with "What the hell just happened? Who are these people?" Chris will still be tracking them with night vision and will add "They just went off that way, probably to their car [or the lot we passed]. We should get out of here while we can so they don't notice us." Everyone agrees and they run back to their car and jump in. John signs in relief and says "Thank God. Let's go." Bryan responds with something of a call to action: "No, we've got to find out what's going on. We've got to do something. What were they talking about..?" to which John incredulously responds "Did you even see what happened back there? They blew the guy's head off! Literally! You don't fuck with people like that!" Chris would get an idea at this point and tell Bryan to drive over in the direction their car should be so they can look for it and maybe get some lead.

56. Stop to Set Tracker

They drive over in that direction and come up on a small concealed lot with space for a couple of cars. There's one suspicious looking vehicle sitting there that they hadn't noticed before. Bryan cuts his lights, pulls off, and parks quietly. One of them should say "That's got to be it." The vehicle is a dark and very clean-looking luxury vehicle. They start looking in and around the car, but hear some faint rustling in the woods, so Chris quickly grabs a small device out of his pocket and places it under the skirt of the car. We hear the clink of a magnet sticking to metal. The other two look confused, but he just says "Alright, come on, let's go." One of the others softly asks "Wait, what was that?" to which Chris responds "I thought it might come in handy, it's a GPS logger. I got it at Toys R Us. It's supposed to be for keeping track of your dog or something, but I just duct taped a magnet to it. Now let's go." They follow him and quickly run back to the car. Inside, Chris pulls out either his laptop or smartphone and shows them the pin detailing the car's location. He says "Alright, this will show us wherever that car is within satellite range. We just wait and see where it ends up in the morning and we'll have our lead."

57. Going Through Trash

We transition to the next day. The three are in a car again (perhaps a different one), and Chris is saying" Alright, it should be around here somewhere. It looked like a residential area on the map, so I'm assuming it's where he lives. It looks like he's gone now." They enter a neighborhood and slow down in front of a particular house. Bryan asks "This is it, right?" and John sarcastically remarks "No, it's that other house in this neighborhood with the same address." Bryan rolls his eyes as Chris responds "Yeah, but pull around to the back…" They drive into an alleyway and stop, idling on the side. Bryan inquires as to what they're going to do now, to which Chris unhelpfully responds "I dunno, I just got us here." John suggests throwing something through the window and breaking in. (Maybe a log? "So we go in and take out the log when we leave. It's the perfect crime.") Bryan comments that he's not so sure that's the best plan, then pulls forward to try and see more of the house. He then notices the trash cans and excitedly spouts "The trash! That's perfect!" before cutting the engine. The others complain, groaning and saying "Oh, come on." and "Really??" as Bryan responds "It's what the FBI does. I read about it. It's not illegal and sometimes you can find a lot of stuff in there!" John says back that he still thinks it's a better idea just to break the window and go inside, and Bryan sarcastically retorts "Yeah, because that will leave no trace." They load the trash bags into the back of their car and take it back to John or Bryan's house, then dump it across the backyard. As they start to go through it, John continues complaining, saying it's disgusting, etc. and Bryan says "Calm down, it's not like you're wading through raw sewage." They eventually find a couple of opened envelopes, one from a credit card company and another without a return address. They open them and find that this is definitely their guy-the sketchy envelope is a paystub from the defense contractor that was throwing the party the previous night and the credit card bill carries a string of sketchy purchases.
