int. High school classroom - day

erinthegeek - on 06/26/2009

Mr. Cooper is sitting at a desk, amongst high school students, front and center in a classroom that has "SAT TEST TODAY!" written on the chalkboard. He is well into his forties and is dressed in typical weekend "Dad" fashion (flannel shirt, kahki pants, work boots). On his desk is a calculator, multiple sharpened number two pencils and a PowerBar. He has a small cooler at his feet.

A typical high school kid is sitting next to Mr. Cooper with nothing but a pencil and his test booklet. Everyone in the classroom is finishing up the first portion of the SAT. He turns and sees Mr. Cooper.

Ben

You know, you REALLY didn't have to come along Dad.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 3 versions.

Mr. Cooper

Nonsense! There's not going to be too many more times we can go out and do things just father and son!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 4 versions.

ben

Yeah, but I don't think the SAT is really a father-son activity...

Mr. Cooper

Sure it is! This is a milestone in your young life, I gotta look out for my boy! Besides, if I wasn't here who would keep you hydrated, huh?

Mr. Cooper takes a bottle of water from his cooler and tosses it to his son.

Mr. Cooper (cont'd)

You gotta stay focused for the math section, right?

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 6 versions.

Ben catches the water and hesitantly drinks.

Ben

Yeah, I guess. But you didn't have to TAKE the test with me, you could have waited outside like the other parents.

Mr. Cooper

And miss out on this special bonding time? I don't think so!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

It is time to start the next portion of the test and the students open their booklets and get to work. Mr. Cooper slides his desk a little closer to Ben's.

Mr. Cooper (cont'd)

(loud whisper) Y'know, son...take it from your old man, make sure you really fill in those bubbles...really press hard, gotta make sure the machine picks it up.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 3 versions.

Ben

(loud whisper) DAD! I know! Be quiet!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper slides back and pretends to focus on his own test. He keeps sneaking a peek at Ben until he can't keep quiet.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper

(loud whisper) Psst...Ben...math section? Here's a calculator. How did you not bring one? Didn't you listen to your mother?

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Students are beginning to get disrupted by the whispering as Mr. Cooper tries to inconspiculously hand Ben the calculator.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper (cont'd)

(straining to reach across the aisle) Here...it'll really help...I just put in new batteries...

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Ben

(whispering) Dad! I know you think you're helping, but seriously, be quiet! You're going to get us both kicked out!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 2 versions.

Mr. Cooper

(whispers) Sorry, sorry...

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper focuses back on his test for a second, obviously not working on it. Suddenly, a flash goes off and the sound of a camera shutter is heard.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 2 versions.

Ben

(loud whisper) DAD! What the hell?

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper

(loud whisper) I promised your mother I'd document this!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

teacher in charge (O.S.)

Eyes on your own papers!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Ben

(loud whisper) Dad, please! Just let me finish!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 3 versions.

Mr. Cooper

(whispers) Alright...okay, fine, fine.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Ben and Mr. Cooper both continue working on their tests for awhile longer. Ben is looking utterly confused while Mr. Cooper breezes through the section quickly and throws his pencil down in victory.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 2 versions.

Mr. Cooper (CONT'D)

YEAH!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

teacher in charge (O.S.)

Pencils down please!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper

Woo! Piece of cake! Oh man! How'd you do, son? How'd it go?

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009 2 versions.

Ben

Terrible! And you know Dad, programming that calculator to read, "That's my boy!" and "Kick the SAT's ass, Ben!" really didn't help with the algebra section!

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper and Ben get up, gather their belongings, and start to head out of the classroom. Mr. Cooper hands Ben a PowerBar and pats him on the back.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Mr. Cooper

Don't worry about it, son. It's only a stupid test...it means nothing in the long run...besides I put your name on my test anyway. You're welcome.

erinthegeek - on 06/27/2009

Blackout.
