ToriaSky - on 02/22/2012

Helen browses in the dress section. A few customers walk around and a piano sits untouched off to the side of the sitting area. Helen picks a flapper-style dress off the rack and holds it up to herself in the mirror. A SALESLADY walks over.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 8 versions.

saleslady

Darling, that's absolutely adorable on you. Shopping for a big event?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Yes--my husband and I are attending one of his company's gatherings. I'm looking for something--

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady

Come with me.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

The saleslady drags Helen along through racks of dresses, grabbing multiple dresses and heading to the fitting room.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady (CONT'D)

Here ya go! Let me know how you like 'em.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

She sets the dresses in the fitting room, and Helen walks in. The saleslady closes the door behind Helen. Helen walks out in a short-skirted, straight silhouetted dress.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady (CONT'D)

Ah, you're gorgeous darling!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

I don't know. I'm not very used to this style. My mother wouldn't--

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Betty spots Helen from across the room and heads toward her.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

'Lo, Helen.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Helen's face goes red and she barely waves hello.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty (cont'd)

You sure are looking good in that dress! You have to buy it.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

helen

You're just saying that because you work here!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady

No, it really is beautiful on you.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

The saleslady pulls a long pearl necklace off a nearby rack and puts it around Helen's neck.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady (cont'd)

And that just about completes the outfit!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

Of course, you'll have to buy the necklace too.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Helen puts her hands to her face in amused frustration.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Ahh, you girls sure are good at what you do!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

Hey, we have to be. We have no /men/ to support us, unlike some beauties.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 4 versions.

Betty shoots Helen a look.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

The saleslady laughs along with Betty.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady

Though I am hoping I'll eventually stumble upon the boy of my dreams.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

True love would be nice, but until then, I have no use for a man.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

(If this were a musical, insert a musical number here!)

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

In the new dress, Helen sits on a couch in the nearby sitting area.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

But girls, without a husband, don't you feel empty? I mean, I don't know.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 3 versions.

Helen looks down at her feet and avoids eye contact.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

It's ok. It's a concept a lot of people don't understand yet. Do you think my mom approved of my not wanting to get married?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 4 versions.

Helen shrugs.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady

No parents want this lifestyle for their daughters, but it's what we want.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Betty

Helen, this is a new age. Women can do what they want without feeling tied down all the time. No woman has a responsibility to get married or to please men. Really sweetie, you have to live your life for yourself.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

Helen looks up at Betty and the saleslady.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Live my life for me?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

A CUSTOMER interrupts the discussion.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

customer

Excuse me, I'm trying to find a size--

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

saleslady

Yes, ma'am.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

The saleslady gives the "one second!" sign to Betty and leaves with the customer.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

betty

Well, who else would you live your life for? Of course you live it for you. Now Helen, tell me what you like to do.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

Helen gets up and heads toward the piano.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Um, um--I like to play the piano.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Sitting down at the piano, she hits a chord.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen (cont'd)

Especially jazz.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

She plays a little bit of the jazz she knows.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen (Cont'd) (CONT'D)

I haven't played in so long. John doesn't have one in the apartment--I miss it.

ToriaSky - on 02/28/2012 2 versions.

Betty

If playing jazz is what you like to do, then that's what you ought to be doing! Now I know your parents and your husband don't like jazz, but you do, and it's your life. I don't know what's been going on since you and John middle aisled, but you're never around.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

Customers casually browse through the store, ignoring the deep conversation going on in the sitting area.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

It's a lot work keeping up with a messy house and doing laundry, let alone all the meals I need to prepare! (proudly) I am a wife, Betty! It's what we do.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

Um, are you sure you're happy with your life?

ToriaSky - on 03/05/2012 2 versions.

helen

I'm just getting used to my role as wife! It's what I've always dreamed of.

ToriaSky - on 03/05/2012 4 versions.

betty

(skeptically) Mhm. (normally)Oh, are you going to buy that dress? Because if you are, I know a great place you can wear it! Besides John's function of course.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 4 versions.

helen

This dress? Wouldn't you say it's a little risque?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

Betty gives Helen a look. She is wearing a dress of the same length that Helen might buy.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

betty

It looks great on you. Now go take it off, in the dressing room of course--I'll meet you at the cash register.

ToriaSky - on 02/28/2012 2 versions.

Smiling, Helen runs to the dressing room. She meets Betty at the cash register.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty (cont'd)

What are your plans for tonight?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Well, the usual. I have to have dinner ready for John when he comes home.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

Ok, how about tomorrow?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Same.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

Ahh. The next day?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

I can't. I have to make dinner for John.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Meanwhile, Betty is ringing up the new dress and the pearl necklace.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

There's this great jazz club downtown that Frances and I go to a lot. I think you'd really enjoy it. I'm personal friends with the piano player--maybe I could get you two talking about piano or something.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Betty, you know I'm married! I can't go around at night talking to men in jazz clubs! I have a husband and you have to respect my responsibilities to him. He's counting on me to make dinner.

ToriaSky - on 03/05/2012 4 versions.

betty

Ok, well just think about it. You have to live for yourself sometimes.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 3 versions.

Betty places hands the Macy's bag to Helen.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty (cont'd)

Promise me you'll think about it?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Helen starts to head for the exit.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Ok, I'll think about it!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

betty

Ok!

int. helen's apartment - night

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Helen stands over the stove where some pots are cooking. She mopes around the kitchen, waiting for her pots to finish cooking. She keeps checking the clock. She leans on the counter, sits at the table, and waits around the kitchen.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

The door opens. John walks in and hangs up his coat.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 3 versions.

john

Honey, I'm home!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

Helen rushes toward him.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Thank God.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

I know you're happy to see me, but what's wrong?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Oh no, nothing. Just got a little bored here, you know, having to stand next to cooking pots for the past hour.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

John smiles and gives her a hug.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

What's for dinner?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Grilled pork chop with homestead sausage and focaccia stuffing, apple fennel soubise, haricot verts, and port wine rosemary jus.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 4 versions.

john

That sounds great. It must've taken you a long time.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

(exhausted) It sure did.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 3 versions.

John sits down at the table and Helen brings him over a plate of food.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

Just so you know, I have to head back to work after dinner. We start publishing Fitzgerald's new book tomorrow and still aren't ready. I'm really sorry, sweetie.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

It's ok. Just as long as you're going to eat this dinner I put so much work and energy into.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

Of course I am! A man's got to eat!

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

They both start to eat their dinner.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

So anything new with you?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

Just the same old work stuff.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Like what?

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

There was a meeting today on how to keep our readers satisfied. We found that people like romance.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Oh really? How unusual.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

Ha. Then we all had lunch at a Porteguese restaurant down the street. It was delicious--we should go there sometime.

ToriaSky - on 03/05/2012 2 versions.

helen

Yes! I'd love to try Portuguese food!

They finish up their dinner. Helen puts the plates back on the counter.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

Thanks for dinner, honey. I really enjoyed it.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

You're welcome.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

John puts on his coat and heads out the door.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

john

Bye, Helen. I'll be back before 10.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

helen

Ok, goodbye.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012

John shuts the door. Helen walks into the living room and picks up the phone.

ToriaSky - on 02/26/2012 2 versions.

helen

Hi, hi.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

betty

It's absolutely wonderful that you decided to come.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Helen looks around nervously.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

helen

Ya, John had to go to a meeting and--

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

betty

Come with me.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Betty grabs Helen's arm and brings her to the bar area. She signals two drinks from the bartender. The girls have a seat at the bar and he passes them the drinks. Betty takes a sip from hers while Helen politely grasps hers but doesn't take a sip.

The girls laugh and Betty drinks more of her drink.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Frances should be here soon. Then we'll hit the dance floor.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

helen

What?

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

betty

Have you even had a sip of your drink yet?

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Helen looks down at the drink.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

helen

Not really.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

betty

Come on, I bought that for you.

Helen takes on a look of horror while the other cheer.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

frances

Girlie, what's got you down?

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

It's wonderful to meet you Billy.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

billy

You said you play jazz piano?

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

helen

Well, I try. It's hard to practice when I don't have a piano and I'm not allowed to listen to jazz at home.

ToriaSky - on 03/05/2012 2 versions.

billy

Shouldn't you be up on that stage dancing instead?

ToriaSky - on 02/28/2012

helen

Sir, I don't think you understand. I love playing music. It's all I really want to do.

ToriaSky - on 02/28/2012 2 versions.

Billy nods.

ToriaSky - on 02/28/2012

billy

You mean, it's your passion and you can't play at home? We need to fix that. Jazz music is the future. You know, someday they're gonna be teaching jazz in schools to all the children. Guess some people just don't understand that.

ToriaSky - on 03/05/2012 5 versions.

He takes a sip of his drink.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Are you seriously not allowed to play jazz at home?

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Helen shakes her head.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

helen

Not at all. Supposedly it's the music of the devil.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Billy LAUGHS.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

billy

I've heard that enough times. Alright, here's the deal. Do you really want to play jazz?

ToriaSky - on 02/28/2012 2 versions.

helen

Yes, dear God, more than anything.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Helen's face lights up.

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

You really mean it?

ToriaSky - on 02/27/2012

Helen rushes to the elevator and pushes the button a few times. She scans the lobby. When the elevator doors open, she rushes in and pushes her floor button several times. john

What is so wrong?

ToriaSky - on 03/06/2012

helen

I want to be able to get out of this small apartment, make something of my life, let you take care of yourself like a grown man, and most of all I want to play jazz in my own house!

I'll work it out tomorrow. Our story is, I had an affair with another man. Both you and I know it's not true, but that's the only way we can get this through. I'll be staying at Betty's until I can find a place of my own. I'm assuming you're going to stay here.

John shrugs.

You really are a great guy, and I'm sure there's a perfect girl out there for you. You just haven't found her yet.

Helen gives him a hug, and disappears into the bedroom. She comes out with a suitcase and gives John one last hug.
