EXT. O'Brien Estate — Afternoon

custard - on 01/04/2009

James and Jackson are already down the sidewalk and at the edge of the driveway as Sasha steps onto the porch and makes her way to them. James looks over to Jackson and they both turn around and stop. Sasha stops a few feet from them, and scratches her arm nervously.

Sasha

I--I figured I could, you know, help.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

Sure. We could always use (beat) HELP.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

(wary) Yeah, sure. Uh, the trunk's unlocked, so...

Jackson

(glaring at James) Thanks. So, first time coming to an orphanage, I guess?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

(opening the trunk) Yeah. I--I guess it's ob--obvious? But, you--you know.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

So how did your parents die?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha coughs and her head hits the head of the truck. She yelps and rubs her head. James is trying to keep from laughing, but not succeeding. Jackson rushes to her side.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson

Shit! Are you okay?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

(rubbing her head) Yeah, I'm fine. I think I'm going back inside.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James stops laughing.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

(panicked) What? No! (calmer) I mean, why don't you stay and talk to us? We, uh, like the company.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

Fine. Just hurry up, okay?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson

Yeah. I'm sorry for my idiot brother.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

(walking to the edge of the car) You two are brothers? You don't look it.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

Fraternal twins. I'm the oldest.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

(rudely) I don't think I was talking to you.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

(to himself; cattily) Well.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson laughs faintly and Sasha walks around the yard. She pauses as an orange cat passes by. Sasha smiles and bends down to pet it. It rubs against her hand and purrs. She giggles and coos to it. James slams the trunk shut and Sasha's head snaps to them.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James (CONT'D)

Ready to go back in?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

Yeah, I'll be there in a minute. I just want to--

custard - on 01/04/2009

She looks back to the cat, screaming when she sees the cat as a rotting skeleton. She jumps up, hysterical and terrified. James and Jackson drop the bags of luggage and run to her. Each place their hands around her arms, attempting to calm her down. She looks at them quickly and then back to the spot the cat was. It's gone and she falls to her knees, sobbing and pointing at it.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha (CONT'D)

(screaming hysterically) Where--where'd it go?! It was right there! I saw it!

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson

Sasha! Sasha, calm down. There's nothing there. (shouting) Miss O'Brien!

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy rushes through the door, Edna behind her. Angel and Hannah are watching through the second floor window. Sasha is flailing her limbs about, James and Jackson trying to get a hold on her. Tracy grabs hold of her head and rubs, trying to console her. Edna watches, panicked.

Tracy

Sasha! Sasha, sweetie, calm down. You need to calm down, all right?

custard - on 05/25/2009 2 versions.

Sasha

The cat! It--it was dead! It was there! I saw it!

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

Sasha, nothing was there. There wasn't anything there, all right? You're just imaginin' things.

Sasha

(breathing heavily)All right. There . . . there wasn't anything there.

Tracy

Good. Let's go inside, all right?

Sasha

Okay.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha stands up from the ground, Tracy helping her up. They walk inside, Edna, James, and Jackson exchanging odd looks.

Sasha stands outside of Tracy's bedroom, where Tracy and Edna are talking about Sasha. The door is barely ajar and lets light from the room create a lone line in the dark hallway. Sasha is listening intently. Her expression is strained and sad. It is obvious she is not pleased with what is being said by the two woman in the room. Her hands are clutched into fists and against her thighs. She keeps her back pressed to the wall, far enough not to be seen and close enough to hear what they are saying.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

Mrs. Greener, does Sasha's family have a history of mental illness?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Edna

No. I've never seen Sasha act like this. She's always been perfectly healthy--physically and mentally. I don't understand why she would act like this. I suppose it could be from her parents' death.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

Yes, yes, of course. How did they die?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Edna

They were murdered--their throats slit.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

Did the police find the culprit?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Edna

No. It's an unsolved case.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

Are they completely sure that Sasha didn't do it?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha's eyes widen and she looks as though she was shot. Tears prick her eyes.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Edna

She was cleared. There was a break-in, her parents' window was broken.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

Poor girl. Any idea what could have been the motive?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Edna

I have no clue. Ron and Candy--her mom and dad-- (Tracy nods) were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Everyone seemed to love them. I don't see what there could have been to gain with them dead.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Tracy

It's a shame. Especially since Sasha had to find them.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Edna

(dispassionately) Truly.

Sasha looks down to the floor and wipes at her eyes, stopping the flow of tears. She looks back to the door, where Tracy and Edna have moved on to a different topic.

custard - on 01/04/2009

James (O.S.)

It's rude to eavesdrop.

Sasha jumps and turns to see James and Jackson behind her. She breaths heavily from being startled.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

It's rude to sneak up on a person.

custard - on 01/04/2009 2 versions.

James

That's a snarky comment for someone who freaked out because she saw a dead cat.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

Snarky?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson

(shoving James behind him) We were wondering if you'd be interested in doing a favor for us.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

A favor? What kind of favor?

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

(pushing passed Jackson) We want you to come to a haunted house with us. You know, with ghosts and stuff?

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

Ghosts?

custard - on 01/04/2009

James

Yeah. Anyway, we're going to this haunted house that this old man killed people in and we're going to film it. See what goes on and stuff. We've tried getting the others to go, but they're losers.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

That's sound...

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson

Stupid? Fine. Sorry to waste your time. (ushering James down the hall) C'mon, James. We'll watch crappy TV and get fat.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Sasha

Wait! (James and Jackson stop) It sounds like fun.

custard - on 01/04/2009

Jackson

Wonderful. Meet us at our room at midnight.
