List of the characters and biographies
Joanna
Ex vr-prostitute.
*** Interior (backstory)
Joanna, 42 years old. Had a rough upbringing in North London, breeding a strong survival instinct. Her father died in an industrial accident when she was thirteen. Six months later her mother committed suicide. Joanna was left to bring up a seven year old brother - Andy (Does he get a cameo?). As money ran out they were kicked out of the family home, things were looking bleak. Joanna in desperation takes Andy to Kingsland Road. She tucks him down an alleyway and tells him to stay put. Back on the main street she joins the other streetwalkers to tout for business. A Humvee pulls up. A smartly dressed man steps from the rear door. He waves Joanna in his direction.
The mans name is Alexi, he explains to Joanna in the back of the car that he has brought new technology from Russia into the UK. This technology uses fledgling VR technology to recreate and even amplify the sensations of sex. Wealthy early adopters of VR technology are already growing tired of virtual trips to Paris or the moon. They want the excitement of real contact. More than that, conquest. Would Joanna be willing to embrace technology and be a VR-hostess (VR-hooker really). She would have a place to stay and be fed. Andy? Well there may be a "gopher" type job that means he can stay also.
The youngest of the VR-Prostitutes in Alexi's employ, her young mind seems to meld naturally into the environment. Some of the highest profile customers only pay to be online when Joanna is available. As her reputation increases the coding that goes into her idol makes her ever more alluring and realistic. Her influence grows, and natural leadership qualities develop.
As Alexi's prodigy she builds a business acumen that she now wields mightily post Ravages.
XXX What happened to Alexi? XXX
Cass
Young estranged wife of August.
*** Dramatic need
Cassandra is waiting for something to happen, but doesn't know what. She is constantly on the verge of leaving August, but is afraid of not having someone to protect her. She grow to be afraid of uncertainty but is nostalgic for her younger, braver self.
*** Interior
She had ambitions to pursue her musical career after university, but broke her hand in a skiing accident and never recovered enough to be a world class pianist.
Tried soft drugs but doesn't do them anymore, partly because of the influence of August.
She cherishes two pieces of jewellery: a silver necklace given by her mother for her eighteenth birthday and her engagement ring.
Background
Cass was born in 20?? to Michael Stanton Wells, an independent energy consultant, and Sarah Catherine Wells (née Leroux), a historian, (originally from Montreal, Canada), in Tandridge, Surrey. She has a brother, Evan, who is 2 years older. Her childhood was generally happy and uneventful, although punctuated by her parents' arguments. Because of this, she was a dreamy child and found it difficult to make close friends. At the age of 14, Cass's mother returned to Canada when her father had an affair with the daughter of a Russian politician, Iliana Soskovetsova. It was decided that Cass should remain in England to finish her education.
Cass had always been close to her father and mother. She doesn't see her mother very often, but tries to talk to her at least once a month. She feels a little guilty about this but consoles herself that both her parents are now happier than before. Her relationship with Iliana has been rocky but, for the sake of her father, Cass has attempted to get to know her and actually found a lot of common ground.
After finishing her degree, Cass spent a year travelling the world with Evan. During this time they spent 3 months travelling around Europe, then 4 months in South America, following the coast from Suriname to the Southern tip of Argentina. It was during this trip that she met her first long term boyfriend, Anton Fourier, a French diplomat's son. After Argentina, the siblings had planned to return to England but, at Anton's suggestion, the group travelled to New Zealand, where his father owned a ski cabin in the mountains. After 2 months, the relationship between Anton and the siblings had deteriorated to the extent that they felt they had to leave. It was nearly a month before they could return to England, which had been thrown into turmoil by the Ravages. Cass's father was able to pull some strings and Cass and Evan were able to land fairly comfortable jobs - Evan chose to travel to Russia to work for his father and Cass got a job in the Home Office. It was during her work there that she came into contact with August who was, at the time, a councillor running for local government.
Academic
She attended St.Theresa's school for girls near Dorking until she was 18. Whilst there she achieved 11 GCSE's at grade A, 2 at grade B and 3 A levels at grade A in English, Classics and Music. From there she went onto read English Literature at Oxford, where she attained a First Class Degree with Honours. She also studied the piano and achieved grade 7. She had ambitions to pursue her musical career after university, but broke her hand in a skiing accident and never recovered enough to be a world class pianist.
*** Exterior
Professional
When she married August, he insisted that she give up work to support his political ambitions. Instead, Cass has put her efforts into charity work. On occasion she has been approached by charities that help those disenfranchised by the Ravages, but August has always vetoed this. She works hard, often giving up her free time to help out.
XXX Having her the model of professional behaviour is maybe too much of a caricature? XXX
Personal
She tends to be shy with people she doesn't know and even with friends she can be withdrawn at times. The people she socialises with now are polarised by August - some of them are in awe of him, others despise him and this colours all of the relationships she has. The only person she can really open up with is her brother, whom she misses greatly. She is very diplomatic and never pushes her opinions onto others. XXX Is it what made her submit to August's strong personality at the beginning? Or is it because she is overly cautious and August pushed her opinions for her? XXX
She is naive in personal relationships, having only had 1serious boyfriend before August. She still finds it difficult to understand what he wants from her at times. Until recently, she tended to blame herself in these instances for not being considerate enough. Now, she is beginning to question whether August is being completely fair with her. About a year ago, she had a miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy and since then she and August have rarely had sex together. Cass still feels guilty about it. XXX Does August use it against her or is he careful and understanding, not knowing how to react (better in tune with his violent reaction at the end) XXX
Private
Cass likes to spend time alone, but she would also rather be busy than not. In unguarded moments, she wonders if her life is really everything that it could be, whether she is missing out on something important. However, she has always convinced herself that she is very lucky to have a husband and a relatively comfortable life. In her private fantasies, she imagines having children with someone (not August) or leaving it all and returning to South America or going to live with her mother in Canada. XXX How about her brother?XXX
Alex
VR guru, creator of idols
August
Neo-luddite leader married to Cass.
*** Dramatic need: August wants to return the world to how it was before VR. He is a traditionalist generally, but more so than others sees VR as an evil afflicting society, like drugs, gambling, alcohol, etc. Unlike people who score lower on the RWA scale, he is genuinely scared by the effects of VR. He has a strong sense of morality generally, and feels that law-breakers and rebels should be punished harshly for their crimes. He is however inconsistent, feeling that authority figures he views as allies (including himself) should only get a slap on the wrist for breaking laws in order to reach a "greater good".
*** Action
Professional
August is perceptive, detail orientated, and likes to spend time with his subordinates. He ensures everything is well planned and scheduled and can become upset or stressed if plans or schedules fall apart. He is always willing to give a piece of his mind, and his opinion is always worth asking for, since he is smart and perceptive but his critical evaluations can be blunt or cold. He resists new ideas, and does not react well to criticism.
XXX More on respect of his fellow humans XXX
Personal
August enjoys being around people, but if stressed will relax or exercise alone.
XXX More on relationship with Cass XXX
Private
August does not enjoy being alone but may isolate himself if stressed. August prefers to be constantly busy and does not generally enjoy simply sitting around relaxing. If he has nothing else to do, he will resort to planning or scheduling, or read practical, fact heavy books such as biographies, books on leadership, or books relating to his anti-VR cause.
A quick reminder of the most important information needed:
Interior concerns all the background story of the character, its biography, basically what makes her what she is today. Childhood trauma/happy experiences, biggest fear (What would be in their room 101), past jobs, love affairs, etc.
Exterior concerns all that is happening during the movie.
* Dramatic need: what the character wants to win, gain or achieve
* Action: How the character behaves, with 3 subsections
Professional: How the character behaves at work?
Personnal: How the character behaves socially or with her spouse/partner
Private: How the character behaves alone — jpdrecourt, on 01/30/2008

Note : Post too large, split into several pieces.
OK, I'm going to take a stab at August.
[ Comments (like this one) are intended to help people follow along and give everyone an idea of what I was thinking, so they can better understand the intent of my text. ]
I picture August as an ESTJ on the Myers-Briggs type indicator (see eg, http://www.personalitypage.com/ESTJ.html) and scoring high on both the RWA and social dominance scale. (see http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/)
With that in mind I'll try to answer JP's questions :

[ This is largely the RWA part of him kicking in. High RWAs generally view unknown or bad things as scary and can make knee-jerk reactions that last a long time. The traditionalist part comes from the ESTJ - they generally repeat things that have worked for them, so they find that traditionalism is a sound position for them. Professional: How the character behaves at work?
August is perceptive, detail orientated, and likes to spend time with his subordinates [ the E and S from ESTJ ]. [ Mostly the T and J parts, with little bits of E and S thrown in ] In reality he has little respect for his fellow man, but is an excellent actor and plays the part of a caring person to the hilt. His disrespect for his fellow humans erupts when he has a victim who is powerless to hurt him. Those who he decries as enemies (and can therefore claim are slandering him) or even allies who are powerless to do anything or feel unable to speak out will feel his wrath. [ Social dominance animosity + intelligence + authoritarianism ]
Personal: How the character behaves socially or with her spouse/partner
August enjoys being around people, but if stressed will relax or exercise alone. [ ESTJ ] August's relationship with Cass is a complex one. Originally August truly loved Cass, and visa versa, but August's love waned. Since their marriage, Cass has been slowly isoloated from her previous friends and family. [ Whoever is doing Cass - did she have much family/friends before? Where are they now? Dead? ] This was partially by August's subtle design, but largely coincidental due to his work and movements. As such, he views Cass as powerless and therefore his socially dominant side can come out. When alone, he treats Cass like dirt, makes her do all the work and emotionally abuses her, which he enjoys greatly. [ I think it would be over the top to suggest he beats or rapes Cass, but it would be only a short step from his current position. ] Cass feels unable to leave August, since he is her only link to other people, and thus shunning him would be to shun everyone she knows. [ Note : Some have suggested putting dominant/submissive relationships in the film. Just to be certain everyone understands - this is NOT one of those relationships. In such a relationship Cass could stop or leave at any time. Instead she feels powerless and unable to stop him, a direct contrast to a normal dominant/submissive relationship ] August NEVER berates Cass in front of other people, and in public treats her as a loving husband would. He is very careful not to get caught exposing his socially dominant side (except to approved social enemies, such as VR users) — Urzumph, on 02/11/2008

Great Urzumph. Exactly how I pictured August too.
I had an interesting thought as you mentioned Cass and family. What if Cass, her family and Alex all lived in say Vancouver. August took Cass away from Alex and her family to Britain. Alex can still be in Vancouver, this drives the necessity of the VR relationship. Although with the magic of VR this isn't such a big issue. Alex's hacking skills allow him to navigate the connections through to Britain and Cass.
This makes the physical isolation of Cass work and drives a complete conversion of her as a Luddite supporter under August to a VR convert and gives her the strength to break from August.
Some other potential scenarios are:
August hits Cass when he finds she has been "unfaithful" - physical. Alex takes a virtual revenge on August.
Joanna losses out emotionally to Alex and seeks virtual revenge on him?
How will August and Joanna clash?
I'll get around to an analysis of Joanna soon. — tagline, on 02/11/2008

I didn't want to mention Cass too much in the August one, because I want to allow whoever does Cass their freedom. I like your idea about them being physically separated (Britain / Vancouver). As I understand it August is supposed to arrest Alex near the end, so we would need Alex to leave Vancouver.
As for hitting Cass, I think we should be careful with that. Anyone who hits their wife is automatically evil, and therefore stereotypical, so that's not the first impression we want to leave from such a complex character. I could see it used to show him at boiling point, but I think we would want to do it carefully.
I hope some of that made sense. I'm going to bed now before I pass out. — Urzumph, on 02/11/2008

I've started bioging Cass. It's good to have this info on August as it has cleared up a few things I needed to know :) I'm going to take her backstory up to the point where she meets August, so that we can work together to get the details of their relationship right. One thing is that Cass is very much a home counties girl, but I can work in a plausible scenario as to how Cass can be isolated as you suggest.
One thing that I'd really like to see is a backstory for August; the 'internal' part. I think that it'd really round the character out and give us more idea about why he is who he is. — jokigenki, on 02/11/2008

First part of a short fictional piece on Alex to start fleshing him out.
“I'm Randal Smith and this is 'Real', the show that makes you feel good to be real. Tonight we welcome one of the most successful reconversion of the post-Ravages era. You probably remember him as a VR criminal.”
Photofit of Alex flashes on the screen.
“He was responsible for some of the most disgusting pleasure domains where hundreds of people lost their soul and dignity.”
Fleeting low quality pictures of distorted bodies lying on top of each other. Impossible to know whether it's reality or VR.
“Or even the hacking of the neo-luddite offices, before it grew into into the acclaimed social organisation we know today.”
Surprisingly pristine picture of a shack, a few low tech computers. Clearly visible in the background, posters warning against the danger of VR immersion.
“He is now at the forefront of the battle against VR isolation, using his talents to bring society back on track. I bring you the hacker simply known as Alexander!”
The lights in the studio focus on Alex, sitting on a chair opposite the presenter. His tired face bears an exaggerated, stiff smile. He waves to the cheering audience.
Randal: “Alex, good evening.”
Alex (Soft tone, even voice, almost too even): “Good evening Randal.”
R: “First obvious question, what made you turn to this new lifestyle?”
A: “Well Randal, I'm glad you ask this question. It's not so much a turn than a new way to see old things. I still consider VR useful. (gasps in the crowd, Alex turns to them and smiles even wider) but in the hands of the right people. It's like the atom or medicine. Not everybody should use it. (the crowds claps and cheers).”
R (forced laugh): “You scared us for a second! What made you realise that VR was so dangerous?”
A: “The very images you showed. The degradation of people's lives, the collapse of society, the collapse of my own life. I woke up one morning after a long immersion and I thought: 'There must be something else.'”
R: “This and the militia knocking at your door!”
Alex shifts on his chair, forces a light hearted laugh. — jpdrecourt, on 02/12/2008

Second and final part...
A: “Yes, well, they were the catalyst, the extra boost needed for my quote-unquote 'conversion'”
Alex doesn't move his hands to make the quote/unquote sign.
R: “So your time in the reconversion centre was just a formality?”
A: “I'd be lying if I said that it was easy. It was really tough. I went through several depressions, two suicide attempts (he shows his wrists, close-up on the scars) and some electroshock therapy. But I made it.
R: “Congratulations Alex, this is fantastic. It deserves a loud applause.”
Randal claps with the audience. Alex bows modestly.
A: “It's all thanks to the supportive nurses and doctors of the centre. We should clap for them.”
Alex joins the clapping. After a short while, silence again.
R: “So what are you up to these days, Alex? Fighting the bad guys?”
A: “In a way, yes. I use my talents for a more productive goal. I create idol viruses that pollute VR worlds and saturate them with messages against VR immersion.”
R: “What's the message?”
A: “A simple one: 'leave VR to specialists.'”
R: “And are you one of them?”
A: “No, no, Randal. I've pledged never to use VR again. My idols are just simple programs, like old computer viruses. My task is to make them more versatile and easy to transport over the low bandwidth connections. Then they search for high bandwidth strongholds where they can decompress themselves and populate the world.”
R: “Why the pledge?”
A: “A simple precaution. Like alcohol, VR can sneak back in any time. I don't want to do it again, I want to be myself (turns his face towards the camera), in reality. (the crowd cheers).”
R: “Well, thank you Alex. It's a pleasure to see such a vibrant success. I hope your example will be followed by all these people who loose themselves in VR.
A: “Thank you too. It was a pleasure to share my experience.”
Lights out. Applause. Dimmer light comes back. The two men talk close to each other.
R: “Not bad Alex, a bit long on the idols though.”
A: “Sorry Randal, I did the simplest I could.”
Randal taps Alex shoulder.
R: “Not to worry, we'll cut it. Think about something shorter for next time.”
Alex's back seems to collapse.
A: “Next time?”
R: “Yeah! In a month or two. I've heard you're becoming an icon around here!”
Alex nods, mumbles a thanks and a goodbye and leaves.
Outside the studio, night is falling. Alex grabs his bicycle and cycles out of the property and onto the humid road. After a few hundred meters, he stops in a small street, drops the bike, and starts sobbing silently against a wall. — jpdrecourt, on 02/12/2008

Back story on Joanna:
I wonder what happened to Alexi?

Childhood and family
Cassandra was born in 20?? to Michael Stanton Wells, an independent energy consultant, and Sarah Catherine Wells (née Leroux), a historian, (originally from Montreal, Canada), in Tandridge, Surrey. She has a brother, Evan, who is 2 years older. Her childhood was generally happy and uneventful, although punctuated by her parents' arguments. Because of this, she was a dreamy child and found it difficult to make close friends. At the age of 14, Cassandra's mother returned to Canada when her father had an affair with the daughter of a Russian politician, Iliana Soskovetsova. It was decided that Cassandra should remain in England to finish her education.
Cassandra had always been close to her father and mother. She doesn't see her mother very often, but tries to talk to her at least once a month. She feels a little guilty about this but consoles herself that both her parents are now happier than before. Her relationship with Iliana has been rocky but, for the sake of her father, Cassandra has attempted to get to know her and actually found a lot of common ground.
After finishing her degree, Cassandra spent a year travelling the world with Evan. Cassandra's father was able to pull some strings and Cassandra and Evan were able to land fairly comfortable jobs - Evan chose to travel to Russia to work for his father and Cassandra got a job in the Home Office.
— jokigenki, on 02/16/2008

Exterior
Professional
Cassandra is always the model of professional behaviour, perhaps to the point of being over cautious. When she married August, he insisted that she give up work to support his political ambitions. Instead, Cassandra has put her efforts into charity work. On occasion she has been approached by charities that help those disenfranchised by the Ravages, but August has always vetoed this. She works hard, often giving up her free time to help out.
Personal
Cassandra is only called Cass by her closest friends and family. August always calls her Cassandra, even in private. This, combined with her social reticence has often been taken as being weak willed, but when Cassandra sets her mind to something, she will achieve it. She is naive in personal relationships, having only had 1 before August. She still finds it difficult to understand what he wants from her at times. Until recently, she tended to blame herself in these instances for not being considerate enough. Now, she is beginning to question whether August is being completely fair with her. About a year ago, she had a miscarriage in the early stages of pregnancy and since then she and August have rarely slept together. Cassandra still feels guilty about this and it is something that August likes to use against her.
Private
Cassandra likes to spend time alone, but she would also rather be busy than not.
Dramatic need
Cassandra is waiting for something to happen, but doesn't know what. She is constantly on the verge of leaving August, but is afraid of not having someone to protect her. She grow to be afraid of uncertainty but is nostalgic for her younger, braver self. She wants to reconnect with her family, who have been increasing alienated by August.
That's it so far. There are a few blanks, and I'd really appreciate any feedback :) — jokigenki, on 02/16/2008

@tagline: could we use Alexi in the backstory webcomic? — matthanson, on 02/19/2008
@urzumph: Thanks for your shot at August's bio. I have added the part that describe August without doubt.
I would like to discuss more August's relationship to other humans and in particular to Cass.
First the other humans: I think August believes in the power of redemption. He despises people that are subject to VR-addiction. But I don't think he's a tyrant who will hurt anybody who doesn't have the power to hurt back. In a sense, he's an idealist who's gone overboard. I think it'll give more complexity to the final character when he realises how deep in "corruption" he's gone to actually fulfil his goals and fight his fears.
Same goes for Cass: given his profile, he doesn't know how to deal with the loss of power on Cass. In the synopsis, we tried to point out at the fact that August is actually trying to win Cass's love back. If he exerts some sort of domination over her, it's more subtle than pure tyranny. And in any case, Cass was quite happy to be guided early in their marriage.
Of course, this is subject to discussion. What do the other think? — jpdrecourt, on 02/21/2008

"As for hitting Cass, I think we should be careful with that. Anyone who hits their wife is automatically evil, and therefore stereotypical, so that's not the first impression we want to leave from such a complex character. I could see it used to show him at boiling point, but I think we would want to do it carefully." (urzumph)
According to the current version, August hits Cass towards the end of the screenplay, and it triggers Cass's escape. As you say, we're not trying to portray him as evil, but instead show his incompetence.

@tagline: excellent back-story for Joanna. Her difficult youth makes her quite hard and not afraid of taking drastic decisions. It will also bring a fairly selfish character. First out of necessity, then as things get better out of vanity. — jpdrecourt, on 02/21/2008
@jokigenki: Thanks for Cassandra's very realistic bio. I'll need to edit some of it before putting it in the final document and raise some questions to debate. More to come in the next few days. — jpdrecourt, on 02/21/2008
@jp: Sure thing. Of course this is just a starting point! The characters of August and Cass will need developing closely together, since they are the most intertwined characters (at the start anyway). One thing that I have just thought about is that perhaps Cass, in her own subtle way, is manipulating August. In the scene where he hits her, could it not be that she has (probably subconciously) engineered the situation? She wants to leave August, but also wants to be forced into it and to not be "the bad guy". This also ties in with the idea that Cass ends up in the 'subservient' role in her relationship with Alex, but actually has the power. — jokigenki, on 02/21/2008
That's it... the bios are up to date! Look for the XXX's for questions/places which need more info. — jpdrecourt, on 02/22/2008
I feel that we should bring all the discussion back to the ASOA forums. The more conversations going on the better. — tagline, on 03/21/2008
