ARIDO is spanish for 'barren' it is a generic town set near the sea in a marshy, desertish area in South Texas. And yes, the Karankawa are rumored to be cannibals, and known to be fearsome warriors, all of which we'll play up in the script to highlight the fact that THE SENTINEL is a stranger from a strange land, though the natives themselves will get only a few seconds of screentime in the film.
