FADE in - EXT. the edge of a large forest - night

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 3 versions.

The sharp chirping of birds in a dead forest can be heard. EDUARDO is making his way through the forest, kicking branches along the way. One hand in his pocket, with the other holding a flashlight, and a wooden stick. Suddenly, there is a deafening GUTTURAL ROAR that rips across the forest. Eduardo takes cover and looks up to see two German FI-156 planes zip across the forest. They vanish just as quickly as they came. The forest is silent again. Distant mortar sounds can be heard.

EDUARDO

(sigh) Everyday, something new.

EXT. of a wooden watchtower, edge of the tunnel - night

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

Eduardo walks up to ALFONS, an old German who is wearing a backpack and carrying a walking stick. He is just about to leave when he sees Eduardo. He is standing next to a dilapidated wooden watch tower that seems to have been constructed at the dawn of time. It is sparsely furnished; just an old chair, a desk and a two way radio.

alfons

Did you see those things in the sky?

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

EDUARDO

It's...getting worse every day, Alfons.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

alfons

They're fools, all of them! Disturbing the peace of the forest is what they're doing here!

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

EDUARDO

(chuckles) Peace of the forest, you say, eh?

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 4 versions.

alfons

You know what I mean. The animals have a right to be here; it is their home...there's something almost -

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 2 versions.

EDUARDO

"...wondrous about this place. I shall miss it." Yes, I've heard this before. Last shift. You must be happy.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 4 versions.

alfons

I am, but...I shall miss this forest.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

EDUARDO

Whats the point? One day all of this shall be just (kicking a stray branch on the ground) firewood and buildings.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 2 versions.

alfons

(hugs Eduardo) You may be right, son. But remember; some men walk through the forest and don't see the firewood or places to construct buildings...some just see the forest. Always remember that.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

Alfons proceeds to leave. Eduardo is slightly confused.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

EDUARDO

(shakes his head) Crazy old man.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

He goes towards the tunnel and shines his FLASHLIGHT into it. Satisfied that no wild animals are blocking the train tracks, he goes up to the watch tower and uses the two-way radio.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 4 versions.

EDUARDO (CONT'D)

Tunnel clear. I repeat, no animals in the tunnel. Train for 6.20 is a go. Over.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 2 versions.

Eduardo leaves the watch tower and begins his journey home. The distant "chug-chug" of a train engine can be heard.

EXT. the tunnel - morning

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

Eduardo makes his way towards the tunnel, with his FLASHLIGHT and walking stick. As he approaches, he realizes that somebody is sitting on the train tracks, staring directly into the tunnel. Eduardo hides in a nearby BUSH and peers towards the person - it's a little boy. The boy is scruffy, is wearing dirty and torn clothes, and is squatting on the train tracks, peering intently inside. Eduardo goes up to the kid.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 5 versions.

EDUARDO

(waving his walking stick around) Hey....HEY KID! You can't sit there!

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

The boy looks at him, says nothing, and then points to the tunnel. Eduardo looks - the tunnel is empty.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009 2 versions.

eduardo (CONT'D)

What? This is called a tunnel, boy. Now run along before your parents get worried...or...or...some animal comes through that tunnel and EATS you!

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 2 versions.

The boy smiles faintly and shakes his head; his eyes never leave the tunnel.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

Production note: Time lapse shot of sun setting over the forest skyline

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

The boy is still in the same position he was. Eduardo is now up in his watch tower, scanning through his notes. He occasionally looks down to look at the boy. The boy decides to get up; but does so after giving the tunnel one last look. He looks up at Eduardo, waves sadly, and leaves.

cut to - int. small wooden cabin - night

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

The door creaks open as Eduardo enters. Tired, he drops his walking stick on the ground and limps towards the couch. Plumping himself down, he scans his cabin - it is small, and cramped. There is a couch, black and white television and the kitchen in one corner. In the other is a single bed, a desk and photos framed on the wall. Some of these photos are of a younger Eduardo during his wartime days, with his platoon buddies. There is also a photo of Eduardo and a beautiful girl. The photo frame on this one is cracked and is held up by tape. Eduardo goes up to the desk and dials on the ancient telephone and waits patiently. We only hear his side of the conversation.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009 2 versions.

EDUARDO

Hi. I need to leave a message for Mrs. Gustav...yes, I'll wait. (pause) Yes, the message should read as follows...(hesitates) nevermind. Thank you.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

Eduardo slams the receiver down and stares at the telephone. The distant roar of mortar can also be heard now. Eduardo puts his head in his hands.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

EDUARDO (CONT'D)

Stop...stop (now shouting) STOP! STOP! STOP! (slams his fist into his desk) Verdammen!

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

cut to - ext. tunnel - day

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

There is a serene calm around the forest. The little boy is back, sitting in the same place he was before. Eduardo is up in his watch tower, looking at the boy.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009 3 versions.

EDUARDO

That's it.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/21/2009

Eduardo makes his way from the watch tower towards the boy.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 2 versions.

EDUARDO (CONT'D)

(shouting, huffing) You...have...no RIGHT to be here. (looks back to the watch tower, realizes he left his walking stick) dammit!

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

The boy points towards the tunnel; Eduardo looks. apart from the usual darkness of the tunnel, a pair of red eyes stare back at them.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

EDUARDO (CONT'D)

(in awe) It's a panther. Quick - (tries to push the boy behind him) get behind me!

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

The boy shrugs Eduardo off.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Boy

Let go off me.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

EDUARDO

You...you talk? We have to leave. I have to radio in and tell them that -

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Boy

No...we don't have to do any such thing.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

EDUARDO

(flustered) Are you crazy? That..thing can kill.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Boy

No. Look! (points) It is injured! We need to help him.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

EDUARDO

We need to do no such thing. Come, I'm taking you to the nearest town..panthers are dangerous.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Boy

Just because it is so big doesn't mean it's dangerous, you hear me! With or without you...I'm going to help him.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

The boy runs into the tunnel. Eduardo hesitates, then sighs as he picks up his resolve and slowly limps inside the tunnel. A deep growl can be heard emanating from the panther. However, this does not deter the boy. He goes up to the panther and pets it. The panther purrs. Eduardo looks on.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Boy (CONT'D)

See? Not everyone (shoots a spiteful glance at Eduardo) is dangerous.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Eduardo shrugs and helps the boy carry the panther out of the tunnel. The panther does seem to be injured but he lets out a loud ROAR and then runs away, leaving a trail of blood behind.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009 2 versions.

EDUARDO

Well...at least someone is happy here. HEY - (as the boy turns to leave) where are you going? And who are you?

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Boy

(shrugs) I just came here to see something beautiful. And something broken. I saw both today.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

EDUARDO

The panther, yes?

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

boy

(looks directly at Eduardo) "You have to learn to let go." An old man told me to tell you. But he said not to tell you until you show some compassion.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Smiling, the boy waves to Eduardo as he leaves the tunnel, never to return again.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

EDUARDO

"Learn to let -"...Alfons? (starts laughing...slowly the laughter subsides and Eduardo puts his head down.) "Learn to let go."

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009

Eduardo smiles and walks towards the watch tower.

AbhinavSinha - on 09/23/2009
