Dean, a nine year old boy, is on holiday in Melbourne with his parents Will and Eliza. Due to rains, they leave the city, but collide with a truck once outside the city. Eliza and Will are killed, and Dean breaks his arm. He is then visited by Warren, Will's estranged brother, who takes him into his custody. In the ten weeks following the accident, Warren turns his life around, an immature slacker, and Dean learns to come to terms with the deaths of his parents. At the same time, Dean's aunt and Eliza's sister Margaret wants to take Dean into her own custody.
