The family sit anxiously waiting for 1 minute before a vet comes over to speak to them.

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

jess_hann - two years ago 4 versions.

GIRL

(worried) Yes - he's a boxer. Is he going to be OK?

jess_hann - two years ago 3 versions.

VET

Yes, he will be absolutely fine - we are very experienced here. How long ago did these symptoms start?

jess_hann - two years ago 3 versions.

MUM

(looking at the others for reassurance) An hour ago maybe...? We came here as soon as it started.

INT. VET ROOM - DUSK

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

SFX. X-ray.

jess_hann - two years ago 4 versions.

CHRIS

Above me you can see a picture of Hugo's torso. All of his organs seem in perfect condition and his blood pressure is normal. However...

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

CHRIS uses a long stick to point up at the riding crop in the X-ray. He runs the stick along the crop to show the full length of the crop.

jess_hann - two years ago

CHRIS (CONT'D)

...This here is unusual. It is clearly not a natural mutation or a broken bone. It looks very similar to a stick however is very long so... more like a whip, or something similar.

jess_hann - two years ago

SFX. Lightswitch.

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

The lights turn back on. CHRIS walks down the stairs in centre stage to join DAD who is at the bottom of the stairs on a chair looking up at the screen. DAD remains sitting while CHRIS stands in front of DAD (facing towards the audience). CHRIS takes a breath preparing himself for his next sentences. This breath shows he is putting on this act of bravery and courage.

CHRIS (CONT'D) (CONT'D)

We are going to go into surgery to remove this item. I regret to inform you that there is some risk we may penetrate an organ; causing greater damage or death. However, if we successfully remove the item the result will be tremendous. Are you happy to go ahead with the operation, sir?

jess_hann - two years ago 3 versions.

DAD

(hesitant) erm... (beat) YES, of course - there is no other answer!

jess_hann - two years ago

CHRIS

Great news. I'm going to have to ask you to return to your family and wait for further information.

jess_hann - two years ago

DAD

Thank you. Look after him.

jess_hann - two years ago

CHris

Certainly.

BLACKOUT:

INT. WAITING AREA - EVENING

jess_hann - two years ago

The family are waiting anxiously in the waiting area. DAD is staring in air whilst jigging his leg. MUM is holding onto GIRL and is stroking her hair. They all look very tired and upset and sit in silence. After a moment, CHRIS HAWKINS walks from the top of the stairs to the bottom and to the left where the waiting area is. When they spot him, they all stand up, swiftly, and hold onto each other (like what you'd see in a family photo). They look at him, hoping for an answer. Before anyone can speak, HUGO comes running down the stairs barking. The family see him and break from their tight unit.

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

MUM/DAD/GIRL

(relieved and happy) HUGO/BOY/YOU'RE OK!

jess_hann - two years ago 3 versions.

GIRL is kneeling on the floor with her arms out waiting for him to bombard her. MUM and DAD are both slightly bent over and slapping their thighs. HUGO runs towards them and runs around them, wagging his tail. CHRIS is looking at their unity and smiling. He begins to talk which grabs the family's attention.

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

CHRIS

It turns out he had swallowed a 21-inch riding crop.

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

MUM

Well how on earth did that there? But moreover, how did you get it out?

jess_hann - two years ago

CHRIS

We had to cut into his neck in order to pull it out. It's a true miracle that we didn't have to cut through any organs to get to it. What a trooper you've got yourself!

jess_hann - two years ago

DAD

We can't thank you enough doctor Hawkins.

jess_hann - two years ago

GIRL is thrilled to hear the news so she runs towards CHRIS and gives him a big hug around his belly.

jess_hann - two years ago

GIRl

(with a big smile) Thank you so much Mr. You're my hero!

jess_hann - two years ago

CHRIS is shocked by both the hug and her comment. He hesitantly rubs her back with one hand whilst keeping the other to his side.

jess_hann - two years ago

Chris

It's just my job sweetheart. You have such a lovely dog and a lovely family.

jess_hann - two years ago

CHRIS takes a knee and puts one hand on GIRL's shoulder.

jess_hann - two years ago

CHRIS (CONT'D)

(friendly) Now, we need to look after your Hugo for about two more days then he will be all yours - just like usual. Do you think you could make sure you are very nice to him when he gets home? Give him lots of water and lots of attention. How does that sound?

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

GIRL

I will make sure my poor little puppy gets all the attention he needs!

jess_hann - two years ago

MUM

(small chuckle) And what about us? Will we need to give him any medication?

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

Chris

We will see how he does over the next few days then let you know what further actions we will need to take.

jess_hann - two years ago

MUM/DAD

Brilliant/ Sounds good

jess_hann - two years ago

Dad (CONT'D)

Thank you, for everything. You've done a fantastic job. Now let's go girls.

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

CHRIS

Thank you. We shall give you an update tomorrow with his state and then we'll see you in two days to pick him up.

jess_hann - two years ago

ALL

Thank you

jess_hann - two years ago

Chris

See you then.

jess_hann - two years ago

GIRL hugs HUGO once more before leaving. MUM and DAD both stroke him.

jess_hann - two years ago

GIRL

Bye Hugo. Get better soon.

jess_hann - two years ago

MUM/DAD

Bye Hugo/Bye Pal

jess_hann - two years ago 2 versions.

The family walk stage right. Before they get to the curtain, they all turn around and give HUGO one last wave. HUGO barks. They walk off all hugging and looking at each other smiling.
