MARIA takes a seat on the log, her FRIENDS crowding around her. IAN rests an arm across her shoulder. ZOE hands her the notebook and plunks down between MARIA and CHLOE. MARIA opens the notebook to a marked page. She begins to read.

Suddenly, IAN seizes Maria from behind. She gasps, then starts to giggle as he whirls her around and sets her back on her feet. IAN stands at six feet two inches, very slender. He has blue eyes and black hair cut in a slightly scene or skater style, his bangs falling into his eyes. He dresses like a skater, as MARIA does when she is not wearing her school uniform. MARIA turns to face IAN.
CHLOE
Cal Emmett? As in, point guard Cal Emmett? National High School MVP Cal Emmett?
CHLOE
The softball co-captain doesn't count, either.
The STUDENTS arrange the desks into quads. MARIA and ZOE's group members are CHLOE and JULIET. CHLOE SYBIL is of average height and build, with the typically Aryan blue eyes and blond hair. She is not a terribly bright student, and attends Carter Academy because her grandparents are school donors. She is very preppy and somewhat stuck-up. None of her FRIENDS are sure why they hang out with her, since she does not appear to like any of them too much. JULIET MARTIN is built like MARIA. She has fair skin, blue eyes, and flame-red hair. She wears a neat skirt and pressed blouse. JULIET is a little shy, and only opens up with her friends.
ZOE

ZOE
I thought it might be that jerk. Forget about Doctor Hamblin. You don't need him.
MARIA
They had been friends forever, but their powers had come only recently. Though the six were radically different in every way, their powers and their mission bound them together. Or so they thought.
