CHRISTIAN--a 21-year-old college student with a lot of friends and seemingly few problems lives the Epicurean philosophy that happiness means never suffering, and that the secret of life is to avoid all negative emotion. He manages this by avoiding all commitment and sleeping around with multiple suitors, making up for the fact that he was hurt by his summer fling MADDIE who he has completely avoided since summer. After his first semester as a Junior he heads back home for Winter Break along with all of his high school friends. While having flashbacks from his previous summer with MADDIE, he struggles with the idea of love and forgiveness.
A gay couple gets married and decides to adopt a child. At first, all is well, the family struggling and coping with issues together, until the child gets sick and dies. This, along with the abandonment of the main character by his family thrusts him into a deep depression. His husband tries to help before it is too late and their family is destroyed forever.
A desperate man takes desperate actions to gain some kind of control in his miserable life. John Baxter has had enough of life's let-downs and reluctantly decides to carry a gun into a local conveniance store and take the clerk hostage.
